When a person is anxious or is panicking, he or she tends to breathe rapid and shallow breaths. This type of breathing is called cheat breathing. Chest breathing causes unhealthy fluctuation in carbon dioxide and oxygen levels. The body does not receive the proper dose of oxygen which in turn increases the heart rate and also cause dizziness and other bodily conditions that are uncomfortable.
If you start feeling anxious, there is a breathing exercise you can do in order to prevent a panic attack. First, you need to make sure you take deep breathes through your nose at a slow pace. You need to relax and keep your shoulder light. You know you’re doing the right thing when you feel that your tummy is expanding and your chest barely rise.
After inhaling through your nose, exhale through your mouth. Keep your jaw free from tension and pucker your lips a little as you expel air from your mouth. Just repeat breathing in that manner until you feel the anxiety going away. I am sure you have an idea on how to stop a panic attack from now on.
