- First, start clicking photographs from today. Yes, it is only the experience that will help you capture the perfect photographs. So start as an amateur photographer while taking pictures in your friend's wedding, birthday parties and picnics, etc. These are the things that will teach you the basics of photography that no school can teach.
- Buy the right camera. You may start with the inbuilt cell phone camera but you must invest in good photography equipment, such as SLR camera, lenses, tripods, and filters etc., when you decide to make photography as your career.
- Reading. Yes you must have a theoretical knowledge about photography, such as, composition of the frame, different parts of camera, how does a camera work and function of lenses, etc. You must read various books about camera and photography that will introduce you to the basic and complex theories involved in photography. Beginner's guide to photography can be resourceful in the initial phase of learning. Theory along with practicals will make you a complete photographer.
- Learning the techniques. You must also learn the tricks and techniques of the trade. You must learn how to take a certain shot using which feature of the camera. In case of a camera with film, you must also know how to develop a film, which chemicals to use, how to perform the enlarging, burning, and dodging of the photographs, etc. In case you are using a digital camera, you must be well versed with the relevant software to edit the photographs further.
- To learn the above basics, you may join a class or college to get a degree, diploma, or a certificate. You can go through the list of various colleges in your local area that provide education and enroll with one as per your choice and convenience. But remember that you still have to continue the self learning process to become an exceptionally good photographer. Simultaneously, also make portfolio of your excellent pictures that can be helpful to get an internship or job later.
- Getting in to the industry starts with doing an internships under the trained professionals for few years. Working with already established and experienced photographers provides you with an opportunity to learn more about the trade and also provides you with larger exposure. While doing this you may also be able to find your niche as there are many types of photography such as, portraits, wedding photography, travel photography, nature and wildlife photography, and photojournalism, etc.
- After gaining significant experience in the industry you may think of opening your own studio or get in to teaching profession, or can also work as a freelancer photographer. You can choose from any of the options that suits you the best. Remember to keep learning and exploring new things about your filed and also keep your self updated with latest information regarding photography so you can adapt and make use of new ideas and technology to improve your work.
