There can be two reasons to soundproof a room, one is to block the noise outside the room and second is to prevent the noise in the room from going out. You may feel the need to soundproof a room due to various reasons, like your love for playing drums, a noisy neighbor, or for the sound sleep of your newborn baby. Mass of an object is inversely proportional to the sound transmitted, i.e. heavier the mass of the object, higher is its ability to block sound. Thus, use of heavy things can help soundproof the room you want. Sound needs a medium for transmission and air is one such medium. Hence, in order to soundproof a room, the air that carries the sound waves should be trapped, the flow of the air in the room should be reduced or sound should be absorbed by some insulators. When sound waves are absorbed by insulators, sound energy is converted into heat energy.

How to Soundproof Walls and the Roof?
Lamination of the walls and the roof can help soundproof a room. Adding extra layers to the existing surfaces will help to block sound. Green glue is a paste that is used to stick the new layers to the original layers. This glue absorbs the sound energy and converts it into heat energy. Sheetrock can be used to laminate the walls and ceiling. Thicker the sheetrock, more effective will the sound absorption be. Green glue is applied to sheetrock, and it is stuck to the walls and the roof of the room. Layers of sheetrock are used to dampen the sound. However, it may take a month for this technique of soundproofing to show optimal results. This is because the glue needs this time to dry and be effective. Special ceiling tiles that require very less effort for installation can be used to laminate the ceiling.

How to Soundproof a Room Using Insulators?
Insulators like acoustic foams and drapes absorb the sound and convert it into heat energy. Use soundproof panels that reduce the reflection of the sound waves. Soundproof panels are detachable and can be hanged on any wall. They come mostly in the white color, but they can be painted, to blend with the wall color or by using any other preferred theme. They are easily available and using the soundproof panels is the most simple method to soundproof a room.

How to Soundproof a Room Using Heavy Mass?
As discussed earlier, using heavier objects can help you soundproof your room more effectively. Use heavy furniture like large book racks that lean against the wall. The larger the mass, higher the number of sound vibrations it absorbs. If you are living in an apartment, the floor also needs to be soundproofed. To soundproof the floor you can use heavy carpets, as larger the mass, less will be the sound that will be transferred. Laminate flooring can also be used.

How to Soundproof Doors and Windows?
Soundproofing the door and windows can solve the problem of soundproofing a room to a large extent. This is preferably the first step when you soundproof a room. Soundproof doors are available, but these are quite expensive. Use of soundproof doors is recommended only when the room has proper ventilation. These doors completely block the air outside the room from coming inside. Vinyl siding or double framed windows reduce the sound coming from the window. They can be a little expensive. Instead, you can use drapes that hang along the window to absorb the sound.

Soundproofing a room depends on whether the room is still under construction or you want to soundproof a room that has already been erected. It is always easy to soundproof a room that is yet to be completely constructed because too many alterations are not required.
