How to Replace Vinyl Siding
Vinyl siding, one of the most popular siding materials, may require repair or replacement when damaged. Here are some tips regarding replacing vinyl siding and how to repair vinyl siding.
Vinyl Siding Repair
Some of the vinyl siding panels may develop cracks or holes, which can be repaired easily. But in case of extensive damage to some panels, you have to replace the damaged vinyl siding, as repairing cannot bring back the panel to its original shape. The following are some tips regarding how to repair vinyl siding. The first and foremost step is to insert a zip tool beneath the lower edge of the vinyl siding, which is above the panel you want to repair. You have to unlock the damaged panel from the one above it. Once the panel (which is situated above) is loose, remove the nails which are used to attach the damaged panel to the wall. Now, pull out the damaged panel and lay it out on a flat surface. The back side of the panel has to be coated with a PVC cleaner. Get a piece of a vinyl panel and stick it on the back side of the crack with PVC cement. Now, the repaired siding is ready to be fixed on the wall. Make sure to leave some space between the nail head and the siding.
How to Replace Vinyl Siding?
While small cracks and holes can be repaired, those panels which have suffered greater damage, needs replacement. Replacing vinyl panels is not a difficult job, if you have the right tools and spare time. This task will be easier for those who have an idea of how to install vinyl siding. The most important thing you need for vinyl siding replacement is the replacement panel, which must be of the same color and texture, as the damaged one. You have to remove the damaged panel with a zip tool. If you find it difficult to pull the nails out, use the claw of a hammer or a pry bar. Make sure that you do not damage the foam insulation beneath the panels. Use a tin snip to cut the replacement panel to the required length and gently slide from below. Make sure that the lower edge of the new panel is hooked onto the ridge provided in the panel below it. Now, nail the panels to the wall (use new nails) and leave some space between the nail head and the siding. Don't forget to lock the ridges of the new panel with the one above it. Use the zip tool to pull the lower edge of the panel above the new one, till it bonds with the new one. You have successfully replaced the damaged vinyl siding with a new one.
Now you know how to repair vinyl siding and the method of replacing it. Repairing and replacing vinyl siding can be done yourself, if the task involves a few siding panels. If there are many panels, you can also seek the help of professionals.
