How To React To Alarming Burglary Facts?

The fact that one is paranoid, does not mean he is not under danger.... How to approach your home safety issues.
Let's face it, most burglary facts are alarming. We tend to shrug most of them off, but every now and then, there comes one that I, for one, can't seem to get out of my head. Much like this one.

It's said that half of all burglaries take place without forced entry. And to that, I say: "Uh oh."

The reason for my sudden eloquence in speech? Simply the realization that we might just be going about securing our homes the wrong way.

Now don't get me wrong; there is nothing wrong with investing in security devices for our homes in hopes of preventing forced entry. I'm not an advocate of abandoning that approach, mainly because that would be - for the lack of a better word - stupid. All I'm saying is that it wouldn't hurt to pay more attention to other security details that we might be missing.

If the previously mentioned burglaries were due to careless acts like forgetting to lock doors, close windows, and so on, I'd actually be more at ease. But while carelessness makes up a few of the cases, in many others, burglars wound up using keys to get inside the houses they robbed.

This is disturbing news, since it doesn't matter how tough our security measures are in cases like these. When burglars acquire the keys to our homes, more often than not, we're left with no means to defend them.

Does this distress me? Of course. Does it surprise me? No, not really. It doesn't because key theft and key duplication are very common these days. It's so easy to hand stolen keys over to skilled locksmiths and have them make copies in no time at all.

It's terrifying to think that burglars have found easy ways to get past our most sound security measures, but they have. But we can't just lie low and give them the advantage. There are still things that we can do to deny them access to our homes.

For starters, we have to understand that home security doesn't end at home anymore. We have to continue to implement it when we're away from home, whenever we're carrying our keys around. Something as simple as using key chains can help, as some of them are specifically designed to fasten our keys to our clothes and accessories, effectively keeping them away from everyone's reach but our own.

It's also a good idea to invest in keys that can only be duplicated by the company that manufactured them, and only with their owner's authorization. And why not look at locks that need something more than a mere turn of a key to open? There are locks out there that require passwords, combinations, biometric prints, or several keys to disengage. Almost anything will be an improvement over traditional lock-and-key sets.

We have to be prepared and take everything into consideration, so that we can stop burglars who either want to attempt forced entry or take a more subtle approach to robbing our homes.

As such, it's advisable that we search for quality locksmith and security companies and go over their products and services, picking out which ones we can use to further our home security. And while we're at it, we might as well ask these companies for any security information and advice they have to share with us. Their products, services, and guidance, coupled with our resolve to keep our homes safe, should all come together to make our homes more secure.
