Want to know how to put up a fence? Then, read this article to know more in detail.
Materials Required for the Fence
Treated lumber posts of size 4 x 4 x 8 feet, 1 x 6 feet cedar fence board, 2 x 6 x 8 feet treated boards, skill saw, hammer, string, drill motor, wood screws, garden hoe, shovel, rake, post hole digger, water and wheel barrow.
Procedure to Put Up the Fence
Level and clear the place where you want to put up the fence. At the end of the fence line, place 12 inch stakes and attach a string. After every 8 ft, attach a small string which can be used as a marking for placing the posts. Around the knot, mark a circle having a diameter of 12 inch. With a post hole digger, dig a post hole. These holes should have a diameter of 12 inch and should be 2 ft deep. On one side of the string, in the hole center, place the post.
The next step is to level this string on both the sides. For holding it in place, you can use 2-1x2 braces and stakes on both the sides and also attach screws. After you have placed all the posts in the hole, level the fence line properly. In a wheel barrow, empty the cement bags, add water to it till it forms thick paste. For mixing cement, you can use a sturdy garden hoe. Pour the cement in a hole, with a stick, tamp it down and level it properly. The level of the cement should be below the ground level.
The next step is to attach the rails. The lower rail should be 12 inch above the ground level while the upper one should be 4 ft from the lower rail. For attaching these rails, you can use long screws.
The next and final step is to attach the fence boards. Tie a string at each end of the fence board. Against the rails, place the board and level it side to side. The next step is to screw the string to the board. With the help of two small screws having a size of approximately 2 inch, screw the board to the rail from both the edges. Now, place the next board and make sure that it is aligned well with the string and screw it. After the placement of 6 boards, check the size and align and adjust it, if required. Continue doing this till you have completed putting the fence.
The last step is finishing which involves removing the strings and other objects. If you want, you can paint the fence. Level the ground under the fence line.
