How to Properly Secure Your above Ground Winter Pool Cover

During winter seasons, it is very important that above ground winter pool covers are properly installed for if not, it will practically be useless. Strong winter winds can easily damage and break it. Not only will various dirt and debris get into your pool, you will also have to spend more time re-cleaning your pool, and more money for buying or repairing your pool cover. If properly installed though, it can ensure maximum protection for your pool thus allowing you to fully enjoy your pool.

Before proceeding with actually covering the pool, first make sure that you have set the water to the recommended level for covering and that all the necessary pool chemicals have already been mix with the water. If you are done with those, you can then start covering your pool.

Position the cover evenly on top of the pool. The overlapping edges of the cover should be even all the way around. By the way, when purchasing a pool cover, make sure to buy one which is slightly larger than your actual pool. If your pool, for example has a diameter of 5 feet, then get an above ground winter pool cover which is at least 8 to 9 feet in diameter. This extra area in the pool cover is the space you will need in securing the pool cover in place. Do not purchase one however that is too large because that will simply be too bothersome.

One the cover is properly set; we can then proceed to securing it in place. Using a sturdy rope, thread the perforations of the edge of the above ground winter pool cover then tighten the rope with a winch. Tighten it as securely as possible.

Wind is the greatest enemy of above ground pool covers. What we are trying to do is to make sure that the wind has no way of getting under the pool cover and has no means of blowing it off.

Another tool that can be used to secure above ground pool covers is the winter cover seal. It is like a large sheet of clear plastic that can be placed on top of a pool cover in order to seal the winter cover in. Its primary purpose is still to keep the winds out.

One more thing, you cannot use just anything to weigh down the pool cover. There are some people who put water in milk bottles then hang those bottles on the pool cover in order to weigh the cover down. Do not so this. This will only damage your cover even further. The bottle will move around because of the strong winds. The constantly uneven and shifting weight will stress the pool cover to the point that it might break.

If unsure regarding what to do, always follow the manufacturer’s advice in handling their products. Most items today always come with a user manual.
