How to Promote Teamwork in Workplace

In a company people from different thoughts of school come together and if each starts pulling in a different direction the tasks and goals will remain unattained. If employees come together and work as part of a team then the company stands a better chance.
Last thing you want in a company is employees who can't work together as a cohesive unit. An organization hires people to perform individual tasks which add up to the company's goal. However if the individual fails to perform his duties the company suffers and if the company suffers other employees will suffer. In an organization everything is interrelated, so employees need to understand the importance of teamwork. Encouraging teamwork is an essential duty of the management to help improve productivity and quality at the workplace. Promoting teamwork isn't easy as people have a tendency of not getting along with each other. Special efforts have to be taken if you want employees to come together and perform as a team.

Ideas to Promote Teamwork

You need to first understand the barriers to teamwork. One of the biggest problem of working with a group of people is dealing with individual egos. Another thing is conflict between individuals with strong personalities and people with different point of views. Competition within the organization can also play a havoc on teamwork as individuals work with a personal agenda. Now that you know a little about the barriers let us look at some of the thing that can be done to promote teamwork in a workplace.

Individual Importance
For achieving organizational goals individual performance is very important and the management should take heed of this fact. To motivate each employee involve them as much as you can in goal setting and appraise them of their responsibilities in achieving the goal. Give the employees as much information as you can, involve them in the project and set deadlines. It is also important that you impose on them that they are responsible for the outcome. These simple things will help motivate individual members so they can contribute their best efforts for the team.

Team Building Activities
This is one of the fun ways to improve team bonding and create an atmosphere of togetherness among the employees. Organizing team building games where employees can let their hair down and interact with their colleagues outside the regular work environment. This will help them understand and appreciate their team members. Taking the employees out for an office picnic or lunch will also help your team building efforts as employees will get to know each other and form bonds.

Effective Leadership
Without effective leadership individual members will pull in different directions and this will lead to chaos. Appoint people with leadership qualities as project managers and team leads and assign them the responsibility of motivating and monitoring members on the team. Choose leaders who will lead by example and will be seen as role models by team members. Appointing a leader who can bring people together and get them to work towards a common goal is a great way of promoting team work.

Effective Communication & Clear Targets
Ambiguity has no value in a workplace, it is important that each team member clearly understands his goals and the means to achieve them. Plan for one on one meeting with individual team members and appraise them about their targets and how they can go about it. Advice them about the importance of prioritizing work. Tell them how their performance will affect their appraisals in the organization, let them know what they stand to gain if they achieve their targets. Inquire if they have any doubts and ask them about the barriers they face when achieving set targets. Lack of communication is one of the factors that leads to teams not functioning effectively. Let each person on the team know about the company's vision and mission. Let members know that they can give feedback on issues if they feel it will help achieve the goals. In the end make sure the team comprehends the goals and the means to achieve it.

One important factor that shouldn't be left out of promoting team work is good rewards and recognition program. Patting your employees on the back will give them a sense of belonging and an understanding that their efforts were well-recognized. Such programs work wonders for the motivation of the whole team.
