Preventing Water Pollution at Home
Do you know 70% of our planet is covered by water and out of that only 1% is fit for the usage of mankind. When you take in consideration all the natural disasters affecting mankind, this number decreases even further. To make sure we have enough usable water for our future generations, it is important that we find a way to make sure that the existing water sources don't become unusable. Let's start with our own home; apply the following ideas and encourage the practice of clean and hygienic water.
- Make sure you flush liquid waste down the drain. Liquid wastes are extremely dangerous for humans and if they get mixed with water bodies like lakes and streams, they can be extremely harmful for marine animals. Throw away the liquid waste by properly flushing it down the drain which will lead it to the water treatment plants for better recycling. You can also inquire about which liquid waste should be drained from the kitchen sink.
- Limit the usage of water. This may sound very simple to many people but most of them don't know how to follow it. By minimizing the amount of water you use, you will also limit the usage of water which goes down the drain. You can save water by using the shower and not taking a bath-tub. Turn the water off when you're brushing your teeth and use the required quantity of water for your lawn.
- Be careful when it comes to car maintenance. Car motor oil is very toxic and it can be very dangerous if its allowed to run through drainage pipes and sewers, even car cleaning chemicals, for that matter, are very harmful for water. Make sure you use organic products as far as possible. If you are applying a chemical based cleaner to your car, make sure to collect all the waste in a bucket and then dump it down the drain. If you want to help out more, you can seek the help of the local recycling department.
- Use natural fertilizers and pesticides and stay away from chemical products as they can run off into nearby water bodies contaminating it. Make sure you use natural pesticides and insecticides which are made of organic products.
- Avoid littering in water bodies and if you really feel you can bring in a change, form a support group of friends and family and start cleaning beaches, and other water bodies. This can attract a lot of attention and many people would soon join your struggle.
