How to Prevent Stretch Marks
Stretch marks are some of the common problems which occur after pregnancy or when losing weight. Find out some simple preventive measures for stretch marks in this article.

Stretch Marks Due to Weight Loss
When people gain excessive weight, all of a sudden, the skin is stretched to such an extent that the middle layer of skin, known as dermis and the underlying collagen tissues, responsible for maintaining skin elasticity break apart. As a result, tearing and minor bleeding take place, due to which the reddish or purplish stretch marks appear on the skin. Over a period of time, these areas are healed, but in the process scarring take place. Eventually, the stretch marks appear as silvery white streaks on the skin. However, when the skin is stretched or pulled too tightly against the bodies, these marks may not be visible. But, as we lose weight, they become more prominent.
First of all, try to lose weight slowly and gradually. Rapid weight loss can result in more prominent stretch marks. At the same time, drink plenty of water, at least 8 to 10 glasses a day, in order to keep your body well hydrated. This will help to maintain skin elasticity and avoid stretch marks. This is because, the more elastic the skin is, the lesser is the probability of getting stretch marks. Regular exercising can also help to improve your skin's elasticity. Also, follow a balanced diet, and use a good moisturizer and vitamin E oil to nourish your skin and improve its elasticity.
Stretch Marks During Pregnancy
According to some estimates, about 70 to 90% women develop stretch marks on their skin during and after pregnancy, the reason being excessive weight gain and consequent stretching of the skin beyond its capacity. To escape from the problem of stretch marks during this period, keep a close watch over the kind of foods you are eating. Though weight gain is inevitable during pregnancy, you can avoid unnecessary weight gain, by avoiding foods that are high in saturated or harmful fats. Following a balanced diet can help you to control rapid weight gain during pregnancy.
At the same time, drinking plenty of water and regular exercising can help to increase the elasticity of your skin, and hence, reduce the likelihood of developing those ugly stretch marks. Keep the skin well moisturized by using natural oils like, olive oil, wheat germs oil, lavender oil and emu oil. You can also try some home remedies like, cocoa butter, aloe vera gel, all of which are excellent moisturizer. Massage your skin with olive, almond or wheat germ oil. Exfoliate the skin at regular intervals to increase blood circulation and remove the dead skin cells. These few simple steps would help to ensure that your skin stretches without tearing, which in turn can prove effective for preventing stretch marks after pregnancy.
So, the basic steps on for preventing stretch marks are, drinking lots of water, proper skin care to keep the skin well moisturized and supple, regular exercising and following a balanced diet. As far as exercises are concerned, the pregnant women should talk to their physician regarding what type of skin toning exercises would be safe for them.
