Softball is a game that is very much like baseball with the same concept in mind, but with some differences that come into the picture making it two very distinct games on their own. Some of these differences lie in the size of the ball for instance, where the softballs are less hollow and heavier than a baseball. The ball is pitched in an underarm fashion in softball, whereas in baseball it is thrown either in a sidearm or overarm maneuver.

Baseball has nine innings when it comes to professional standards, whereas softball has seven innings. Even the bats are different where softball ones are shorter with a thicker girth, where baseball bats are more lean and lighter. There are many youngsters out there who'd like to learn how to play softball in college, since many universities have this as one of their game options besides football or basketball.

Important Softball Terminology

Remember that equipment like medium weighted bats that aren't too light or excessively heavy, are needed along with softballs that are ideally 11/12 inches round, including chest protectors, battling helmet, softball gloves, face masks, catcher's mitts and shin guards. Consider switching to softball cleats than sneakers for better grip and agility.

Strike Zone: The area that is covered by the player's knees and shoulders over the home plate that they keep bounded is the strike zone.

Home Run: When the defensive team has no stance on an out, the batter can run and cover all four bases since the hit has surpassed the field by a far off shot.

Foul Ball: If a ball lands within or outside fair territory but rolls out into what is called the foul territory, it is considered a foul ball before it has been touched by a fielder.

Bunt: The ball is tapped by the batter and not swung at when it is placed as close to the home plate as possible where it finds itself as a ground ball in the infield fair territory.

Walk: The pitcher when he/she throws four balls to a single batter in one bat, then the batter earns what is called base on balls or 'walk'. The umpire decides over this once the batter has successfully hit four balls in a row. This makes the batter eligible to become base runner advancing to first base once that walk is earned.

Fair Ball: This is known as a ball that lands within the parameters of the first base line that falls to the right, and the third base line that falls on the left.

Ball: This is when a pitch has crossed the plate on the outside the strike zone which umpires keep an eye out for.

Base Hit: A ball that lands within the fair territory, allowing the batter to reach first base without any problems.

How to Play Softball for Dummies

Keeping the above terms in mind and also what is needed for the game, you're good to go and ready to get started on your softball match.
  1. The players are sort out according to which role he/she plays. These roles are titled under 'first base', 'short stop', 'pitcher', 'center field', 'hitter', 'third base', 'left field', 'catcher', 'second base' and 'right field'.
  2. Once the designated players are assigned, the pitcher firsts pitches an underarm move, which is made by throwing the ball below the hip portion which isn't far from the elbow's length from the body.
  3. The batter makes a run for it when the ball has been hit, making his/her way to the ends of the diamond ring with one foot touching each base.   5. The 'walk' is observed when a batter is seen hitting four balls in succession earning him/her the 'base of balls' move advancing them to first base. Three strikes make an out where the batter fails to hit all three throw outs in a row.
  6. The next thing that happens is half an inning after the ball has been missed thrice, then the batting team moves over to the field next while the other team gets ready to bat.
  7. The game proceeds to up to seven innings where score ties are taken a step further into extra innings should such a situation arise.
