How to Organize a Small Room

Just imagine yourself sitting in a small, cozy, clean and clutter-free room where everything is easily accessible! You like it, don't you? Read on for tips for organizing a small room...
A small room, if not organized properly, can seem very haphazard, claustrophobic and unlivable to the inhabitants. If you have a small room, whether a living room or a bedroom or a laundry in your house, you will understand what I mean. So, if you are ready to take on the task of making your small room comfortable, convenient and beautiful, here are some of the easy ways to organize your room.

De-clutter
The first thing that you need to do is to get rid of the things that you do not need. Knowing most of our tendencies, we rarely throw away clothes or shoes that we spend huge amounts of money on, even if we have not been able to fit in them for years! So, get rid of all such stuff, be it books, shoes, clothes, stationery items, technology items, old toys (if there are kids), faded and spoiled furnishings, broken jewelry pieces, old DVDs and all those things that you feel and know that you are never going to use! You can donate the things that are still in good condition. This way you won't feel bad on giving them up. And those which are past their prime, I think you would do yourself a favor by giving them up!

Categorize
Assuming that now you know what all things that you need to store, start dividing them into various categories. Clothes, shoes, furnishings, books, DVDs, jewelry - these are some of the categories that you can make. By categorizing, you will know how much storage space you need in your room.

Add a Closet
The reason for your small room being in a mess could be that you do not have enough storage. So, get a new closet. Go in for a closet which has lots of small shelves, drawers as well as a place to hang clothes so that you can store a variety of things in it. In your closet, stack all the clothes, shoes, accessories and other items that otherwise lie around in the room or which you have stored in baskets and other small containers.

To organize a small kid's room, you can buy some plastic containers and store their small toys, undergarments, socks, craft items, etc. separately in these and then keep them in a closet. Getting a bookshelf is also a good idea. On the bookshelf, keep the books that the kids use often in the upper shelves and those which he rarely uses, in the lower shelves. If the bookshelf has a closed top, you can utilize it for keeping blankets, bed sheets, etc.

Add shelves
In addition to the closet, in case you have lot of other stuff to keep, it is suggested that you add shelves to the walls. On these shelves, you can keep some decorative baskets and store various kinds of items in them. In rooms, where a closet can not fit in, adding shelves to the walls is a good alternative. Preferably, add these shelves near the ceiling so that they do not occupy the room floor space. On higher shelves, store items that you do not use frequently as they are not easily accessible.

Re-arrange the Furniture
For organizing a small living room or a bedroom, a good idea is to re-arrange the furniture in such a way that the entire room starts looking spacious. Also, make sure that you only have the basic furniture items in the room. While choosing furniture, go in for sleek looking one, instead of bulky furniture pieces. A small bedroom should have a bed, closet and a side table. A living room should have a sofa and a central table. Besides these, you do not need any other furniture item.

Keep it Clean
Once the room is organized, clean it. Vacuum the rug, dust the furniture and clean the floor. Keep a dustbin and a laundry basket in the bedroom so that after a few days you don't end up with a pile of clothes around the room. Every weekend, devote ten to fifteen minutes to clean the room. Every six months, de-clutter the room. This will ensure that the room stays organized.

One last tip before I sign off - in case you are thinking of repainting the room or adding new furnishings, choose lighter shades as they will make the room appear much bigger than it actually is! A bigger room any day has a more organized and cleaner look, even when it is somewhat messy, than a smaller one!
