Have you ever come across a situation, where you are ready to serve the wine and the corkscrew is missing? You may not be able to open the bottle, unless you find the corkscrew. Most people do not even think of any alternative method for opening the cork in the wine bottle.

Ways to Open a Bottle of Wine Without a Corkscrew

You don't have to worry if there is no wine accessory like a corkscrew to open the wine bottle. There are many different methods, which can help you out. All you need is a little bit of patience and some simple tools. The following are a few ideas that can help you open a wine bottle without a corkscrew.

Use a Knife
In order to remove the cork from a wine bottle, insert the pointed end of a long, serrated knife into the cork. Once the knife crosses the middle portion of the cork, slightly bend the knife backwards and pull it out slowly. The cork may come out with the knife. If the cork is not coming out, even after repeated efforts, push it downwards, so that it goes down the bottle. If you don't mind the cork floating in the wine, you can directly push it downwards rather than trying to pull it out, which is little bit tricky and difficult.

Use Screw and Pliers
All you need is a screw with deep grooves, screwdriver and pliers. With the help of the screwdriver, gently insert the screw through the middle of the cork, till it is halfway through the cork. Now you can use the pliers to pull out the screw, which will come out along with the cork. You may also use the nail-pull end of a hammer to pull out the screw.

Hitting Method
This is one of the easiest and simple methods to open a wine bottle, if you do not have a corkscrew. All you have to do is to hit the bottom of the wine bottle against a flat and vertical surface. You must hit the bottle firmly and evenly, but, in a slightly slanting position. As there is a possibility of the bottle to get broken, it will be better to wrap its bottom part with a towel. If you are indoors, keep a book against the wall and hit the bottle against the book. In case of an outdoor party, the surface of a tree trunk will be perfect. Don't hit so hard that the bottle breaks. Once you start hitting the bottle gently, the pressure inside the bottle builds up and the cork comes out partially. You can pull out the cork without much effort. If you continue hitting, the cork will come out with force, causing the wine to spill out.

Use a String
Removing cork from a wine bottle can be done with a sturdy string. Tie it tightly around the cork and gently pull at it. The cork may also come out along with the string. If the string is slightly thicker, like a boot lace, you can push the knot downwards with the help of any sharp object. Once the knot is below the cork, gently pull the string, so that the cork also comes out. So a string can be used in any of the above mentioned methods to remove the cork from a wine bottle.

You may also come up with your own alternatives, as it requires only a little bit of common sense. The above said methods are very simple and easy to perform. However, handle the wine bottle gently, so as to avoid any breakage.
