How to Make Snow
Tired of waiting for snowfall? Read this article and learn how you can make snow right at home, all by yourself and enjoy playing in it.

Easy Homemade Snow
Follow these simple steps to make homemade snow:
- To start with, you need to purchase snow powder either from a retail store or online.
- Take a bucket and fill it with water. Your snow powder comes with instructions on how to use it. Follow them to know how much powder you will need to mix with water in the bucket.
- Once you have added the required amount of powder in the bucket, stir it with your hands for about 5 to 10 minutes and mix till the mixture becomes firm.
- You will then have to fluff up the snow with your hands by taking it out of the bucket and spreading it, with the help of a rake. Doing this will prevent the snow from getting dirty or compressed. Enjoy the snow in a plastic pool or your backyard.
- You do not require any more materials other than a very low atmospheric temperature and water to make snow in this way. You will only require a pressure nozzle, which will sprinkle out small particles of water allowing the atmosphere to do the rest.
- For your pressure nozzle, use either of the following options - a pressure washer, a nozzle specially designed for producing snow or a snow cannon (slightly expensive).
- You will then have to spray water in the air at a 45 degree angle, so that maximum air gets mixed with water to get best results.
- Use as much cold water as possible, to help quicken the snow formation process. The snow formed stays longer if the temperature also remains low for a long time.
Apart from the methods mentioned above, there are a few other ways which you can use to make fake snow if you require it for some specific purpose, such as a school craft project, for a play, or to decorate your Christmas tree.
To make fake snow for your school craft work, mix together 1/4th cups of talcum powder and common salt each. Apply glue on the surface where you want to place the snow, either using a spray-on glue or placing small quantities of white glue with a brush. Sprinkle the fake snow mixture you made on this and you will have included fake snow in your craft project successfully.
You can also make snow using instant snowflake powder. You will have to mix 1 cup of liquid starch with 4 cups of instant snowflake powder or blue food coloring. Stir the mixture well and you can add glitter if you want to give your snow a sparkling effect. Once mixed properly, apply the mixture wherever you wish, and allow it to dry. This method is a good way to decorate your Christmas tree or a stage with snow. You can also use instant snowflake powder to show fluffy and falling snow.
Fake snow can be made using sodium polyacrylate as well. Sodium polyacrylate can be purchased from a garden supply store or you can get it from the inside of disposable diapers. Mix sodium polyacrylate with water to form a gel. Keep adding more water to this till you have made the snow as slushy as you wanted it.
Tips for Making Snow
- Make sure that you make snow outdoor like at your garage, or the backyard. Since snow is light, it tends to fly away and settle on some home appliances or furniture.
- In case you are making snow using snow powder, it won't melt. Dispose it off properly after you have used it.
- Do not eat fake snow even though it is non-toxic as the chemicals present in its ingredients may cause a few health problems.
- To give your artificial snow a desired color, mix food coloring while preparing it.
- A snow gun is very useful and inexpensive tool to make snow. If possible, buy one.
