How to Make a Rum Cake
Apart from being a popular alcoholic beverage, rum is also used as in ingredient in some food recipes. Here are some tips and guidelines to make a rum cake.

Rum Cake Recipes
Rum has been used in food recipes for a very long time. Earlier, it was meant for preservation of food. But, now, it is the flavor that matters most. Rum cake is one such popular recipe that uses rum as an ingredient, either in the batter, or in the glaze, or in both. Some types of rum cake may cause an intoxicated state, if consumed in excess amounts.
Easy Rum Cake
Ingredients
- Yellow cake mix - 1 package (18.25 ounces)
- Chopped walnuts - 1 cup
- Dark rum - ½ cup
- Eggs - 3
- Crisco oil - ⅓ cup
- Cold water - ½ cup
All you have to do is to prepare a cake batter with the above said ingredients, except chopped walnuts. Grease the baking dish or a Bundt pan and sprinkle the chopped walnuts on its bottom. Now, pour the batter into the pan and bake it for around an hour, in the oven that is preheated to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Once done, take the cake out and poke some holes in it, with a toothpick. Now, you can pour some dark rum over the cake, so as to enhance its flavor. You may also prepare a rum cake glaze and pour over the cake.
Jamaican Rum Cake
Ingredients
- Cake flour - 3 cups
- Bread crumbs - ¾ cup
- Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
- Sugar - 650 grams
- Butter - 700 grams
- Browning (a cooked caramel-colored syrup found in certain Caribbean recipes) - 1 tablespoon
- Salt - ¼ teaspoon
- Vanilla - 2 teaspoons
- Lime juice - 2 teaspoons
- Appleton white rum - ¾ cup
- Eggs - 6
- Mixed dried fruits (raisins, currants, prunes, etc) - 4 cups
- Chopped nuts - ½ cup
Take a large bowl and add sugar, butter, vanilla, lime juice and browning into it. Combine them well, before adding eggs (one at a time). Once the eggs are done, add the mixed fruits, bread crumbs, cake flour, salt and baking powder. You may sift the flour, along with baking powder and salt, before adding them to the butter-egg mixture. Now, fold in the rum and pour the mixture into a baking pan that is lined with greaseproof paper. Now, bake it for around three hours, in the oven that is preheated to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Bacardi Rum Cake
Ingredients
- Yellow cake mix - 1 package (18.25 ounces)
- Jell-O instant vanilla pudding mix - 1 package (3.75 ounces)
- Eggs - 4
- Chopped walnuts (or pecans) - 1 cup
- Cold water - ¼ cup
- Wesson oil - ½ cup
- Bacardi dark rum - ½ cup
Grease and flour a Bundt pan (preferably a 10-inch tube or a 12-cup one) and keep aside. Combine the other ingredients and prepare the cake batter. Sprinkle the chopped nuts on the bottom of this Bundt pan and pour the batter into it. Now, bake it for around sixty minutes, in the oven that is preheated to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. You can serve this cake with rum cake glaze that can be prepared with 120 grams butter, one cup granulated sugar, ½ cup Bacardi dark rum and ¼ cup of water. In order to make this glaze, you have to melt the butter in a pan. Add the sugar and water into the pan and let the mixture boil for around five minutes. Remove the pan from heat and stir in the rum. Pour this glaze all over this Bacardi rum cake that is randomly poked with a toothpick, so that the glaze is absorbed well.
