How to Make Oatmeal Soap
Oatmeal soaps act as wonderful moisturizers for dry and acne prone skin. It retains the moisture and heals eczema.

In order to make complete use of this benefit, oatmeal is incorporated into soaps. Oatmeal with its soothing properties, clean and fresh scent blends in well to form soaps. So besides being part of your breakfast, oatmeal has managed to enter your skin care regime as well. Actually, oatmeal's role in skin care treatment is not new. Ancient Romans and Greeks were known to use oat bath to improve the condition of the skin. Oatmeal soap can be easily prepared at home. Let's check out how to make oatmeal soap at home.
Oatmeal Soap from Scratch
Material Required
- 1 cup of ground oatmeal
- 12 ounces of lye powder
- Quarter cup of honey
- 4 cups of water
- 16 ounces of oils (mixture of 25% coconut oil and 75% olive oil)
- Heat proof bowl
- Soap molds
Step 1: Dissolve lye powder into the water, all the while mixing slowly. Since this solution tends to become very hot (exothermic reaction), it's advisable to use a heat proof bowl to prepare this mixture. Once the solution has been mixed thoroughly, allow it to cool and attain room temperature.
Step 2: Next, take the mixture of coconut oil and olive oil and heat it at 100 degrees. Once this is done, set it aside and leave it to cool a little.
Step 3: Once the oil mixture is cool enough, slowly and steadily pour it out into the lye solution. Continue mixing until the liquid attains a thick consistency.
Step 4: Add ground oatmeal and honey into the mixture and mix thoroughly so that all the ingredients get evenly distributed. To enhance the soap's fragrance, you can add any fragrance oil of your choice.
Step 5: Into clean soap molds, pour the soap mixture and allow it to set for a day (24 hours). Then remove the soap from the mold and cure it for about a month. If the soap insists on sticking to the mold, leave the mold in the freezer for 3 hours. Then take it out and blow dry the base of the mold. The condensation formed causes the soap to slip right out. Your homemade oatmeal soap is ready!
How to Make Soap with Oatmeal Easily
Material Required
- 1 large bar of soap
- 3 tablespoons of oatmeal
- Large microwave safe bowl
- 4 tablespoons water
- Soap mold
Step 1: For the base soap you can choose any one of the scented or unscented soap available at the stores. Shred this soap bar and place the shavings into the large microwave safe bowl. Add the 4 tablespoons of water and stir well.
Step 2: Microwave this mixture for 2-3 minutes on high. Make sure you keep a tab on whether the soap is bubbling out of the bowl. Stir the mixture in between as and when needed.
Step 3: Grind up the oatmeal in a food processor, such that the oatmeal flakes retain some of their texture.
Step 4: Once the soap has been microwaved,bring it out and stir in the 3 tablespoons of oatmeal. Mix well. Add in essential oils for fragrance if desired and then pour the mixture into clean soap molds and allow to set for a few hours.
Step 5: Once the molds have cooled and the soap has set, remove from the mold and wrap in some pretty, decorative net cloth and use an attractive ribbon to tie a bow.
If you don't own a microwave, you can also carry out the same procedure on the stove. Heat the soap shreds on medium-heat and once the soap has melted, stir in the oatmeal powder and heat it on low heat for another ten minutes.
