How to Make a Spear

I was a tomboy as a kid as my younger brother had a lot of influence on me. So, needless to say, instead of playing with Barbie dolls, I used to pay Rambo with my brother. We had our allotted trees and we used to make bows, arrows and spears, and fight each other. If I remember correctly I even had a red band like Rambo. Luckily none of us ever got hurt and have grown up to behave like other people from our sexes.

Spear with a Knife and Stick

Making a spear is very easy, in fact, if you have a stick in one hand and a knife in the other, it will be pretty much clear to you. So get yourself a stick that is easy to work with. In the sense, the knife should be able to cut through the stick. The stick should be dry wood and about 2 inches thick and 5 feet long.

Take one end of the stick and start whittling the stick with your knife. Take care that you scrape only a little from the stick as invariably one ends up breaking the end of the stick and then you will have to start all over again. So your aim should be to whit the end to resemble a point. Once you have done that your spear is ready. Yes, it is that easy.

Fishing Spear

To make a fishing spear is equally easy. You need the same tools as above but make sure that your stick is longer. The easiest fishing spear is make of bamboo. So find a good bamboo stick to work with. Take one end of the stick and make straight cuts through the sticks. So that you get three or four pointed ends. Then tie a cloth through the pointed ends and round the stick. This is done to prevent the bamboo stick from slitting into two. All you need to do now is practice throwing your spear.

Another way to make this spear is to take a straight stick, burn it a little and sharpen it against a rock or using a knife. Then take another stick and split it into two. And sharpen the ends using a knife. Then you can tie these two small spears to your stick using a cloth and your fishing spear is ready.

Spear Head

To make a spear head, you can pick anything as your spear head. You can choose a piece of metal, a stick or a rock. Whichever one you pick, remember to sharpen its one end. For the rock you will have to grind it against another for a long time. You obviously don't need to sharpen the metal piece but make sure that it is a straight piece. Choose a thick piece of stick, and make the ends slanted but sharp. The next thing you have to do is to cut a notch in your spear and fix your spear head, tie it securely with a cloth and you are done!

Make a Paper Spear

Making a paper spear is even more easy. All you need to do is take a sheet of paper and roll it diagonally and tape it, this is your spear. For the spearhead, you take another piece of paper and fold it into half. Take the two ends of the paper and make two dog ears. Place them against the open ends of the paper. Now fold the inch long ends, so that they cover the ends of the dog ears. At this point your sheet of paper will look like a triangle. Put your fingers in the base of the triangle, open it and turn it towards you, you will notice that this shape resembles a diamond. So press the sheet of paper into a diamond shape and paste it to the spear. Your paper spear is ready.

You see it is quite easy to make a spear. Just remember to take care when using a knife. Practice spear throwing and who knows, just like Tom Hanks in 'Castaway' maybe you too can catch a fish.
