Those of you having a keen interest in knitting and sewing, have a task in front of you, today! Yeah, pillowcase making that is. Obviously, there would be many of you who would be well versed with the steps, however, since the festive season is around and you have much of spare time to spend at home, you can take up this easy sewing projects for beginners as a challenge and complete it. Now that you have decided, let me tell you that making a pillowcase is a lot of fun and the steps are pretty easy as well.

As I said, the steps are easy to follow and there is no way you are going to be in a fix. Let us start off with the materials before going into the details of the steps. Check out the list given below.
  • 2 yards colored fabric piece (45 inches wide; 21 by 32 inches)
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine or needles (you could hand stitch as well)
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing ruler
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Fabric marking pencil
  • Lace or ribbon
Step #1
Now that you have all the materials handy, first of all make sure that the fabric is of a good quality and does not shrink after wash. In that case, you would have to buy more fabric material. Next, decide the size of the pillowcase well beforehand. I would suggest you go for the standard size which is given above.

Step #2
As I said, after you have decided upon the size of the pillowcase, measure and cut the fabric accordingly, here, 2 yards, 45 inches.

Step #3
After you have cut the fabric properly, you need to fold it lengthwise. Here, however, remember to keep the finished side of the fabric inside so that after the pillowcase is ready, the stitches ain't visible since they would spoil the look of the pillow.

Step #4
Now, sew the lengthwise long side of the fabric together with the help of the matching thread either on the sewing machine or you can hand stitch as well. I would suggest you go for the sewing machine since the stitches are highly efficient.

Step #5
After having done with the long side, you need to stitch one of the short ends as well in the similar manner. So now, you have a pillowcase with 2 sides stitched properly and 1 side already closed. This leaves only one side open which is of course for the pillow to go in.

Step #6
What you need to do is turn the pillowcase inside out so that the finished end is now outside. You would have to hem the open ends of the pillowcase by folding half an inch of the fabric downward towards the inner side of the pillowcase. This is where an iron comes into picture. After you have folded the ends, place a hot iron on them so that it becomes easy for you to hem these using the zigzag or serge pattern. Place the pillow inside and see whether it fits in properly.

Step #7
This step is totally optional. If you want to gift this pillowcase, then you could probably lace the hem near the open ends. This will make the pillowcase standout and also a perfect gift item.

Done! This answers your question on how to make a pillowcase. As you must have understood, the steps are pretty easy and this is certainly one of the easiest sewing jobs from home as well. So do try it out. Good luck!
