How to Make a Fortune Teller Out of Paper

Would you like to learn how to make a fortune teller out of paper? Then what are you waiting for? Read the following article to find out...
As kids, we all have played with the paper fortune teller. But back in the days, we used to have different names for it like cootie catcher, chancer, chatterbox, or scrunchie. A child's game where a little piece of folded paper can tell our fortune. I remember, whenever I was grounded or the weather was unsuitable to play outside, my friends and I would gather at someone's place, get a piece of paper, use color pencils to draw numbers or images on the fortune teller, and fold them accordingly to begin playing. Sometimes, we even wrote silly questions about boyfriends or the future to see what answers we get. In my opinion, every kid should play with the fortune teller as the memories of being young remains fresh with such incidents; a fun origami activity for all ages. And if you want to relive your childhood or perhaps help your kid or niece or nephew in learning to make a fortune teller, then we have the following article for you. Follow the steps mentioned below as you read them.

Make a Fortune Teller

As an easy to make origami, the paper fortune teller doesn't require complicated instructions. All you need to do is gather the materials (given below) and read the directions properly. Have the kids follow what you're doing and learn on their own.
  • First of all, let's gather the material we'll need - 8 ½'' x 11'' construction paper, scissors, crayons or color pencils.
  • Keep the paper in front of you and make a square. To do so, you will have to fold the construction paper in half.
  • Now this half fold will go diagonally. Take the edge of the paper as far in as possible and stop.
  • Wherever you stop, that will make the paper square. As you can see, there still may be some paper left in the bottom; let it be.
  • With the scissors, cut that extra piece of paper in the bottom.
  • When you open the construction paper, you'll see that you have a square.
  • Fold it back like before and now you have a big triangle. Fold it again, from one side to another to form a smaller triangle.
  • Unfold the paper and you'll see that now you have 4 small triangles.
  • Turn the paper around on your workstation so it takes the shape of a diamond.
  • Now fold the top corner in and let it reach the middle point of the 4 triangles. Do the same with the bottom corner as well.
  • Again fold the left and right corner in to reach the middle point.
  • As you can see, this gives you the shape of the square again.
  • Turn the paper upside down and fold the top left and bottom right corners. Meet them in the middle point.
  • Do the same with the top right and bottom left corners as well. Again there's a smaller square shape now.
  • Hold the square paper in your hands and fold it in half from the center.
  • Unfold it once and fold it in half from the other side as well.
  • You will unfold the paper one more time and pull on all 4 edges at once. This will give you the diamond shape.
  • When you do this, you'll notice the 4 square-shaped flaps. Place your left hand's fingers inside to open them properly.
  • Move the flaps around with your fingers to see if it works.
  • Congratulations! You have successfully made a fortune teller out of paper. Now all there's left to do is write, paint, and draw with crayons and color pencils.
Wasn't learning this craft fun? And, now you're ready to play it too. We have another article on how to make a cootie catcher that you can read.
