How to Make a Flea Trap

This article will help you with making a flea trap using a few household items. So keep a pen and paper handy to jot them down and make your house flea-free.
One of the most annoyingly stubborn pests are fleas. They feast on the blood of warm blooded creatures, right from dogs, cats to humans. If you have pets in your house, then that may mean an open invitation for these pesky creatures to take over you home. Not to mention, it does not take time for these blood suckers to multiply and become a bigger problem. Flea bites not only itch like crazy, but they may also cause allergic reactions and rashes in the bitten area of the body. If you happen to live in a flea-prone area, then it is imperative for you to know about making flea traps.

Homemade Flea Traps

Materials Required
  • Lamp
  • Water (warm is better)
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Pan or large bowl
Now once these stuffs are in place, it is time to begin the making of the flea trap.

Instructions
  • Make a soapy solution using the water and the dish soap.
  • Fill the bowl with the solution, and place it somewhere away from pets and kids.
  • Now light the lamp and position it so that the bulb shines above the water. It is better to use a lamp which can be directed onto the water.
  • The warmth of the water and the light will attract the fleas. And once they land onto the water, they would be trapped by the soapy medium, and drown.
  • Change the water the next morning and repeat this method until you do not find any more of these pesky creatures floating on the water.
So this is how you make a flea trap in your house and put an end to the infestation. Here are some more similar methods listed down in brief, to help you get rid of fleas.
  • Get some 3 - 4 cups. Fill them with water, and add a few drops of dish washing soap. You can even add bleach. Now place these cups under a window sill that gets ample sunlight. Again, the warmth will attract the pests, and they would be 'soaped' to death!
  • Make a soapy solution and place it in a shallow pan. Place the pan on the floor near your television set, and leave it switched on for the entire night. Mute the volume if you wish too. The warmth of the TV will draw the fleas and if they land onto the water, they won't be able to escape because of the soapy mixture. The next morning, get rid of the water full of dead fleas.
And that would be it for the flea traps. Do they work? Well, you may have to try them to know it. In the meantime, here are some more methods to get rid of fleas.
  • Make a mix of diatomaceous earth and boric acid (remember that for every ½ cup of the acid, you require 3 cups of the earth). Now sprinkle the stuff on places starting right from the baseboards, carpets, under the bed, furniture, closets and on all those places frequented by your pet. Vacuum after two days.
  • Another alternative method for killing fleas, you can also make use of boric acid and citrus peel extract. First, sprinkle the boric acid in places such as mentioned above. And then, sprinkle the citrus peel extract. Remember to vacuum thoroughly in all these places before sprinkling these stuffs. And after 2 days, vacuum again to collect the dead fleas and their eggs or larvae.
  • As animals are typically the first preferences as host for fleas, ensure that you give your pets and their belongings a thorough wash. You can use medicated shampoos for your pets, and wash their bedding, rugs, in hot water.
Getting rid of pests like fleas naturally not only saves you money, but also cuts down the risk of side effects which can be caused due to toxic pesticides. And this where the above DIY tips on making flea traps come in handy.
