Fleas are generally of size not more than 3.3 mm and are dark colored creatures. They can suck blood with the help of their mouth that resembles a tube. More prone to flea attacks are the warm blooded vertebrates which include animals like cats, dogs, rabbits and rats. Human beings also form a part of this list. Flea saliva is the cause of skin rashes in many people. Fleas can also transmit a disease like bubonic plague. Fleas normally seek shelter on clothes of human beings or on carpets. Carpets are a place where fleas find it easy to multiply, therefore carpets need to be cleaned on a regular basis. To avoid the harmful consequences of a flea attack and to restrict them from multiplying, you must know how to kill fleas in the carpet.

Procedure to Get Rid of Fleas in the Carpet

Getting rid of fleas is not a mammoth task. For this purpose you just require a vacuum cleaner, one broom and some boric powder.
  • The first step is to vacuum clean each and every carpeted part of your house. Following this procedure carefully and slowly would ensure the absorption of maximum number of fleas into the vacuum bag, otherwise you would have to do it once again.
  • The next step is to take out the vacuum bag out of the cleaner and just dispose it outside the house. This should be done promptly as vacuuming the fleas does not kill them. The fleas can flee out of the bag on opening it.
  • Further, take the boric powder and shower it on all the carpets in the house. Boric powder causes dehydration to the fleas, which eventually turns fatal for them.
  • Now, take a broom and spread the boric powder on the whole carpet and keep it for a duration of about 24-25 hours.
  • Re-vacuum all the carpets of the house. The re-vacuuming process would help to get rid of all the remaining dehydrated fleas and their eggs. It is advisable to dispose off the vacuum bag once again, as a few fleas might still be alive.
Points to Remember while Killing Fleas

Boric powder does not affect healthy people much, but could cause problems for people suffering from respiratory disorders such as asthma. It is therefore suggested that these people should leave the room while the procedure of spreading boric powder is on.

If you follow the above procedure of how to kill fleas in the carpet, you will get rid of fleas. But once the boric powder loses its effect, fleas might reappear. You can restrict fleas from multiplying in your house by taking preventive measures such as carpet cleaning, washing all the bed linen, wooden furniture, pet's toys in soap water and maintaining overall cleanliness. Taking the right precautionary measures would help you to achieve flea control and also to get rid of these tiny beasts forever.
