How to Insulate a Garage Door

Insulation is a process which reduces or prevents the transmission of heat, sound or electricity. Insulating your house can help control the temperature inside your home or the area insulated. Garages need to be insulated to avoid any problems in the functioning of your car.
How to Insulate a Garage Door
Last week I met my friend over dinner. She was almost half an hour late. I was waiting for her, wondering if something was wrong. Finally my friend came, rushing along. She told me that she was late because her car went kaput. It didn't start for long time. It was a cold evening. When I probed deeper, I got to know that her garage doors were not insulated. It was adding insult to injury to the already old car. I suggested that she insulate her garage and especially the garage door. She called me up after a couple of days and told me that she had insulated her garage doors.

Insulating the garage has become a necessity these days, pertaining to heavy fluctuations in the weather. If the garage is not insulated, it will cause extreme temperatures to create a negative impact on the vehicle. Insulating the doors is a way to avoid loss of energy since it is a major environmental concern in the context of global warming.

Insulation of Garage Door
Garage doors can be insulated in two ways - Reflective foil insulation and by using polystyrene panels. Basically, the insulating material functions by squeezing itself between the garage door and the floor. Insulation is also useful in keeping the bugs and insects at bay. The things you would need for insulating your garage door are Polystyrene foam, hammer, nails (mandatory), utility knife and garage insulation kits as well as weather strips.

To do:
  • Measurement is a very important thing for such a procedure. So the garage door panels will have to be measured, which would be the first thing to do.
  • Polyurethane sheets will then have to be cut using the utility knife according to the measurements
  • Follow it up with enclosing the foam along the garage panels, using a putty knife
  • Then the inserted foam should be covered with aluminum foil tape.
  • In case you opt for polystyrene foam, then glue the foam to the garage panels after cutting them in appropriate measurement. Follow this up by fastening the panel brackets and strengthening the insulation.
  • Weather strips too are a good option for insulation.
  • For pasting the weather strip, the backing material will have to be removed just like a sticker. Double weather strips should be used.
  • This will expose the sticky side, which should be placed downwards toward the garage door panels.
  • Secure the weather strips either by applying pressure by hands or by using nails.
  • If you find this difficult, then an easy option would be to buy garage insulation kit and install it as per the instructions.
  • Another alternative is using reflective insulation panels on the back of the door or by fixing them over the polystyrene if it is already attached to the door.
  • Check the insulation by closing the garage door and check if a draft is coming in.
These are some easy steps to install insulation to the garage doors on your own.
If you feel these hardware and mechanics are not your cup of tea, the easiest option would be to look into the phone directory and just dial the number of an agency which renders a service in insulation. It is always better to go for insulation as it is not only eco-friendly, but also keeps your vehicle in a good shape.
