How to Install Storm Windows
Installing storm windows can be a bit of a challenge for some, but you will find that it is a challenge that can pay off big. When you fit your home with storm windows you will find that your heating and cooling bills may decrease by eliminating those pesky drafts. They could also help in maintaining your homes structure by preventing any water from seeping in. When shopping for you storm windows be sure to look for quality windows. The better the quality the window the longer they will last and the better they will perform.
The first step in the installation process is to make sure you get a proper fit. So you have to determine the style of your main window. If you home has a western casing then the new window will be attached at a recessed blind stop within the window opening. However, if your home has an eastern casing you would have no stop and your storm would attach to the casing itself.
The next step in ensuring a proper fit is to measure your windows. You need to know the horizontal measurements of the window casing at the bottom, middle and top of your window. After you have those numbers you must measure the vertical distance of the window casing from the bottom outside edge to the top outside edge. In a western casing the storm window can up to 1/4 inch less then the smallest measurements. In an Eastern casing the window can be at least 1 1/4 inches wider than the largest measurement as well as 5/8 inch taller.
The actual installment of the storms is much easier then you think. Once you've hammered out the proper fit all you have to do is apply caulk between the window and the casing depending on you casing style, taking care not to get caulk on the small holes at the bottom. All the while make sure you are keeping the storms level and the frames undistorted. Now just let the caulk dry and you have yourself some new energy efficient storm windows that will protect the integrity of your home's structure and save you money in the long run.
