How to Install Light Switch
Electrical works are not always easy to handle, but installing a light switch is easy and everybody should have knowledge about it. This article will guide you on how to install light switch.

Instructions to Follow
First, you will require some tools like screwdrivers, wire strippers, single pole switch, and a voltage tester to check whether electric current is flowing through the wires. When you are purchasing outlets and switches, buy only commercial grade switches and heavy-duty rated outlets, as they are long-lasting and safe. After gathering all these tools, following steps will guide you.
- Whether you are installing the box or switch dimmer, the first step is to follow electrical safety, by turning off the power supply to the circuit on which you intend to work.
- You can also check the incoming cable with a voltage tester in the electric box, where you are planning to fix the switch. Remember this when you are working on any electrical appliance.
- If you are removing the old switch, first remove the faceplate of the switch. Then, unscrew the two screws that hold the switch firmly to the wallbox. Gently pull it out of the box, but be careful that the switch does not come in contact with the box. Now disconnect all the wires, but carefully look at how they are attached.
- The outlet as well as the service panel will have one green wire, one white and one black wire. A single-pole light switch will have two screws. Remember that the top screw is 'on', whereas the bottom screw is 'off'.
- The most important step is definitely the wiring part. You will have to connect the black wire from the service panel to the top screw of the switch, whereas the other black wire from the outlet, to the bottom screw.
- Now connect the white wire in the outlet to the white wire from the service panel. The green wires are ground wires, they are meant for earthing. By attaching a tiny uncovered piece of wire to the green screw of the switch, connect the other end of this wire to the two green wires.
- Now push all the wires in the box. First the green wire followed by white wires and finally the black wires. Fix the switch on the wall box with the help of screws.
- Do it carefully, as you may damage the insulation by forcing the switch on to the box. So if you are not able to fix the switch into the box, try to rearrange the wire-nuts and wires as flat as possible in the box.
- The last step is to test your work. Turn on the power supply to the circuit and switch on the light.
