How to Install Kitchen Cabinets
Installing kitchen cabinets is an easy task, and doesn't need professional help. The article will provide you with a step-by-step method, on how to install kitchen cabinets.
- Cabinets
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- 4 feet spirit level
- Handsaw
- Screwdrivers
- Drilling machine
Step #1
If you are replacing old cabinets, then make sure you have dismantled them properly, without any damage to the walls. It is recommended that you paint the walls with the color that will suit your new kitchen cabinet. Skip this step if you are installing the kitchen cabinets for the first time.
Step #2
Cross check if the floor where you will be installing the kitchen cabinets is uniform in level. Use the 4 feet spirit level for the same. The point where the bubble moves from one side to the other of the tube, is the highest point. Another method to find the highest point, is to mark a line, 3 inches above ground level. Measure the distance between the line and the ground from different points on this line. The point with the highest measurement should be the highest point.
Step #3
The next step is to take accurate cabinet measurements. Sketch out the proper layout on the wall where the kitchen cabinets are to be installed. Mark the height of the cabinets from the highest point, with a pencil. 18 inches above this line, mark the layout for the wall cabinets. Check for the spaces where appliances, like dish washers, the sink and kitchen countertops, are to be installed. Thus, in step 3, all you have to do is to mark the layout of the kitchen cabinets on the wall.
Step #4
Once you are done marking the layout, start with the installation of the wall studs with the help of a hammer and some nails. These wall studs should align properly with the layout. Mark the positions on the back of the cabinets.
Step #5
Now install the wall cabinets, starting with the corner cabinet. Drill the holes such that they pass the wall studs. Now fix the nails properly in these holes, such that they hold the cabinet.
Step #6
After installing the wall cabinets, start with the lower cabinets. As mentioned earlier, there should be a minimum gap of 18 inches between the upper and the lower cabinets. Align the lower cabinets perfectly to the wall studs and then install the lower cabinet in the corner. If you want to attach two cabinets, then drill holes and attach them through these holes. Use shims for leveling, if the cabinets are not on a uniform level.
Step #7
While installing the cabinets near the sink, make sure you leave space for plumbing. If there are gaps between the lower cabinets, you need not worry, as these gaps will be covered when you install kitchen countertops.
Installing kitchen cabinets is an easy task, and you may not require a professional for the same. Just spare a day or two and install the kitchen cabinets yourself.
