The former are preferred for regular windows and the latter are more commonly used in doors.

Window blinds are categorized as solid window blinds and slat window blinds. The former consist of a single large piece of material, unlike slats, which are made up of strings and which can be rolled or folded. Other window blind types include faux wood, roman and roll ups among the common ones.

All you need to install these, is a measuring tape, pen and a screwdriver. Most often, when you buy window blinds, you will receive a box also containing screws and venetian and mounting bracket.
  • You can choose wooden blinds or the ones with custom colors. Before installing them fasten the mounting bracket onto window casing or frame. Mark the holes on the bracket with a pen. Repeat the same procedure for other bracket.
  • With a drill bit that matches in diameter with screws, drill the holes which you have marked.
  • With a screwdriver, fasten the screws into mounting brackets to attach to the window. Open safety latch on the blind, followed by fastening head rail to the mounting bracket.
  • Lock the latch on mounting bracket to secure head rails for both the sides of window and blanket up the valance on the head rail. You are done with installing blinds.

Custom blinds will cost you between $10-$35 for mini blinds per panel, however, if you need advanced controls for rolling, it may go from $300 to as high as $1500 for high quality material and multiple types. It's worth the cost, since it will add to the designer value of the window. Designer varieties cost between $200-$900 based on quality of material, by Smith & Noble.

While settling on color and blind type, you should think of choosing something which will match with the interior decorating pattern of the room, keeping in mind wall color.
