How to Increase the Speed of Lawn Mowers

A lawnmower is very effective tool for cutting grass uniformly. Many people, even after using such machines, are still clueless on how to increase the speed of lawn mowers. For more information, read on.
How to Increase the Speed of Lawn Mowers
A lawnmower is a machine that is used for cutting grass. They are generally used for lawns spread over a large area. Lawn mowing becomes less time consuming and less laborious by using these machines. Lawn mowers simplify your gardening work and provide an easy way to cut your lawn evenly.

How to Increase the Speed of a Lawn Mower

Components of a lawn mower, such as the engine pulley, governor, spark plug and the wheels, affect the speed and the overall performance of lawn mowers. Here are certain modifications that you can make to speed up your grass cutting machine.

The size of the engine pulley can have a significant impact on the speed of your lawn mower. Also known as the motor pulley, the engine pulley is fixed on the engine's crankshaft. Find out the size of the engine pulley. If it is small, then replace it with a larger one. A big engine pulley (minimum 8 inches in size) is capable enough to calibrate your lawn mower.

If you are not satisfied with your lawn mower's speed, then a smaller transmission pulley can also help in this regard. It is fixed behind the engine pulley and is attached using a bolt. With the help of a wrench, you can easily remove the transmission pulley. When you buy a new one, make sure its size is around 5 inches. In order to boost the engine's power, experts say that the new pulley should be smaller than the original by at least 2 inches.

The governor that is on the top of the engine creates a physical resistance, thereby limiting the speed of the engine. Removing the governor can help increase the speed of your lawnmower to a certain extent. In order to remove it, you have to unhook it. Changing the air filter can also give an extra thrust to your lawn mover. The air filter is located on the left side of the lawnmower engine, in the circular compartment. You can either clean it thoroughly or remove it completely and purchase a new one to achieve the desired speed.

Changing the oil will allow the engine to work more efficiently, which in turn will increase the speed of your lawn mower. Adding new spark plugs and installing larger wheels is also beneficial for increasing the speed of your lawn mower. In some cases, the drive belt or the cable is worn out, and that can slow down the speed. Replace it to increase the speed of your machine.

How to Adjust the Speed of a Lawn Mower

Here's how to modify a lawn mowers speed. Every lawn mower has a speed control mechanism that allows the user to adjust its speed. You will have to adjust the speed of your lawnmower if the engine is not running properly. Maintaining the efficiency of the engine is vital to mow the grass evenly. Following are some instructions that will enable you to adjust the speed of your lawn mower.

The lawn mower engine comes with adjustment screws. One of the screws is at the bottom of the float valve bowl and the other is located on the side of the carburetor barrel. Now, using a screwdriver, turn these adjustment screws clockwise until it is tight. Start the engine and idle for around 5 minutes. Rotate the adjustment screw beneath the float valve bowl counterclockwise, so that it makes one complete turn. This will enhance the speed of the engine. Adjust it accordingly to set the speed to the desired level without choking the engine.

So adjusting or increasing the speed of your lawn mower is not a difficult job and can be easily accomplished by following the aforementioned guidelines. By setting the right speed, you can conveniently take care of your lawn.
