How to Have a Successful Garage Sale
A garage sale is an informal event where a family collects all the items that it doesn't need and puts them up for sale. A garage sale is also known as a yard sale or a rummage sale. Such sales are held within the premises of one's house, most preferably in one's garage. The items on sale range from electronic goods, furniture, toys to clothes. These goods are old and used ones that the family does not require anymore. However, they are in a condition good enough where they still can be used by another family that buys these at a price lower than the market price. Sometimes goods in a garage sale can also be new items, or items never used. Here are a few tips to get you started on a garage sale of your own!

Tips to have a Successful Garage Sale

Set a Date: It is very important to choose a day when one does not have any other important work to do. The best time is a weekend, preferably a Saturday or a Sunday. This gives one enough time to set the venue of the sale and also clear it up after the sale is over. Also, weekends are times when families would be more likely to go out and invest time in rummaging through the goods in a garage sale to get the 'best deal'. Set a date well in advance so that you have enough time to collect the items you want to put up for sale and plan the event accordingly.

Advertise: People are always on the lookout for garage sales as they gets goods that are fit to be used at cheap prices. It is therefore important to let people know about the sale. Check out the various ways of advertising. Advertise in local newspapers. Put up flyers. Check with local stores if they let you put up advertisements for the event in their premises. Mention the time, date, and address where the sale will be taking place clearly. If possible give the directions to the venue as well.

Collect the Goods to be Sold: This is the most important part of having a successful garage sale. Start looking for goods in your house that you want to put up on sale. Start from one room and move on to the others. This is a tiring task. Start this work well in advance so that you do not miss on any item that could have been sold off at a good price. Due to lack of time many people realize that they still have loads of goods that they don't want to use anymore. Wash all clothes. Dust all furniture. People are often put off if they see dirty items and even if they come cheap they might not buy them. This is specially true with clothes.

Call in Friends: Just as people are eager to buy from yard sale, there are many who want to sell their goods at such events too. Check on your friends and neighbors if they also want to hold a garage sale. Large garage sales usually attract more customers as they have larger varieties to choose from. Also more people means having more help and also greater resources to advertise for the sale.

Organization: Organizing the goods to be sold is essential in order to make shopping at your sale a good experience for the customers. Categorize items and keep them separately in different boxes. For example, put all the toys in one box. Display the electrical goods in a different area, preferably where there is a plug point so that people could check if the items are in working condition. Try displaying clothes in hangers. Arrange them according to size and gender. If your friends or neighbors are also participating in the sale, then it is best to tag the goods so that it is easy to understand whose items are being sold, and then accordingly divide the money. You could also write down the price on the tags. That way retaining the tags while packing the goods will make it easy to distribute the profit between you and your friends. It always helps to make a note of the goods that you just can't sell below a particular value. This helps you to maintain your profits. Also set the price of your goods above the minimum cost you want to earn so that you can bargain with customers on the price of the items. Remember to keep the venue neat and uncluttered. If you get time, arrange the goods back in their place to give the area an organized appearance. A clean venue would encourage the customers to spend more time at the sale.

Manage the Sale: It is always good to be available to the customers to help them out with their purchases and answer their questions. However, to be able to do this, one must be sure that there is someone at the cash counter. It would be wise to display jewelry items by the cash counter itself. This way while all monetary transactions can be carried out, jewelry items that are comparatively more expensive than other goods at the sale, can also be taken care of. It would be great if you could arrange for carry bags for your customers to carry their purchases back to their vehicles. This extra effort on your part would surely be appreciated.

Sometimes we have so many things that we don't need anymore. However, many of them are in too good a condition to be simply thrown away. Garage sales are a clever way of removing such things out one's house and at the same time earning some money out of them.
