Windows are mostly the focal point of any room. However, they may not always show a beautiful picture of the exteriors or they may not be well built themselves. Thus, curtains are a must if you want to hide certain architectural or interior flaws. Curtains are also essential to secure your privacy and keep your home out of the eyes of peeping Toms. Since, curtains occupy a considerable wall space, they can actually change the look of your room. Thus, if you do not have any home remodeling plans on mind, but would like to give a quick fix to your home, then simply hanging new curtains is sufficient.

How to Hang Curtains on Your Own

Take Measurements
No matter if you choose to buy readymade curtains or get them stitched, you will need accurate measurements for the same. Thus, take a measuring tape and start measuring from the left corner of your window frame. On a rough paper, draw a small sketch of your window and mark the height and width of your window.

Once you have the height and width of your window ready, select a position where you would like your rod to go. It is recommended that you fix the rod as high as possible to create an illusion of high ceiling. Also, the ends of the rod should extend at least 8 to 10 inches from the window frame, on either side. Mark all the measurements on your rough sketch, so that you can take it to the curtain shop.

Buy Curtains
Select a curtain fabric that goes well with the rest of your décor. If you are going for readymade curtains, the shop owner can give you the curtains as per your measurements. However, you should keep in mind that it is the stitching pattern of the curtain that determines the length of the curtain cloth. If you are going to have many pleats, then obviously you will need longer cloth. For French pleats, if you have a 54'' cloth, you end up with a 25'' inches curtain with pleats. Accordingly, order the drape for your curtains. Also buy hooks, rods and other accessories.

One tip regarding the height of the curtains is that, you should always take into account the fabric of curtains while deciding the length. Silk curtains are best kept long with puddles on the floor, whereas, sheer curtains look great when they just touch the floor. In any case, make sure your curtains do not end several inches above the floor. If you are opting for a heavy curtain fabric, make sure your supports are strong enough to bear the load of the curtains.

Hang Curtains
This is your final step of hanging the curtains. Drill holes at desired height and affix the rod holders on the wall (your sketch can come in handy again). Fix a hook on every pleat or goblet and hang the curtains on the rod. Hoist the rod up and secure its ends in place, on the rod holder.

If you wish to hang curtains without rod, you should probably trust a professional who can do this job without damaging your walls or window frames.
