How to Treat Gum Infection?
There are a number of ways which can implemented for getting rid of the gum infection and also prevent it from a recurrence. You can try these home remedies for a gum infection, which are quite effective in fighting off the infection and even destroying bacterial growth in the oral cavity.
- Apply a hot or cold pack to reduce the swelling and stem the pain. Occasional application of packs will bring down the pain and swelling considerably.
- Try changing your toothbrush or toothpaste if you continue to experience gum problems for a while now. Choose a toothpaste which contains active ingredients like sage and peppermint oil.
- Avoid brushing your teeth vigorously, as it will only help in aggravating the condition and irritate the affected gums. Instead opt for a toothbrush which has soft bristles. Even an electric toothbrush would do.
- Massage the affected gums and teeth with clove oil for a few seconds. Though it may cause burning sensation, it effectively destroys microbial growth on the gums.
- Gargling with salt water solution, lemon and salty water, cinnamon and lukewarm water etc. is one of the methods of treating gum infection naturally. You can also rinse your mouth with vinegar, but make sure you don't swallow the rinse.
- Chewing apples will also help treat gum infections. Since this fruit is rich in fibers and has certain enzymes, it also acts as a natural toothbrush to clean the spaces between the teeth.
- A thick paste of baking soda with lukewarm water, if rubbed on the infected gums, is known to reduce the symptoms of gingivitis and also cure it completely. You can follow this method till the infection goes away.
- Natural aloe gel works wonders for infected gums and teeth. A generous amount of aloe vera gel will soothe the inflammation and get rid of infection in the long run.
- You can also take mild over the counter antibiotics and pain killers to combat gum disease and ease the pain caused by it.
All of us know that a routine checkup with the dentist is one of the first ways to prevent the onset of gum infections. However, apart from this, there are many other ways to prevent gum infection, which you can adopt.
- Brushing twice a day, and preferable before bedtime is the best way to prevent the onset of gum disease. Brushing dislodges food particles stuck between the teeth, which may decay and cause problems, and also cleans the teeth and gums.
- Flossing is also another method to remove the plaque between the teeth and the other unreachable areas in your mouth.
- Using an antimicrobial mouthwash, like Listerine, to reduce inflammation of the gums and also to get rid of the plaque.
- Quit smoking, alcohol, carbonated beverages, etc., if you want to prevent the occurrence of gum and tooth diseases. Eating overtly sugary items should also be avoided to keep gum problems at bay.
