It is better to have a ton of unique content, but having plr articles will not hurt your site at all.

If you are a visitor and are looking for that particular article you will never find it if it was located only on one website. So it is a benefit to your niche customers because the more the article is visible the better their chances are to find it. Remember that search engines want to provide their customers which are your visitors with the best possible results.
