How to Get a New IP Address

For those planning to 'renew' their Internet connection, here's information on how to get a new IP address in steps as simple as ABC...
Akin to phone numbers, IP addresses is a must for connecting users in the world of computers. An IP address lets a user connect his computer to the Internet, and allows them to accurately send and receive information to distinct identifiers. Sometimes, it gets extremely essential to set a new IP address for yourself. There are a number of very easy and user-friendly ways to fetch a new IP address in case you realize that your Internet connection has stopped working all of a sudden. One of the easiest ways to set a new IP address is clicking on the network icon on the bottom left of your screen, and choosing to repair. This will automatically reset a new IP address for your connection. However, IP addresses are of three kinds - local IP, Static IP and Dynamic IP, and all follow a different procedure of getting a new one. Here, in this write-up, we will get acquainted with the method of getting a new IP address on a generic basis.

Getting a New IP Address

Getting a new IP address is easy, and involves the use of the Run command. Here is what follows as the process for both Windows XP as well as Windows Vista:

Firstly, click the Start menu on the bottom left of your screen.

Secondly, click on Run, and type cmd in the box.

Thirdly, type in ipconfig/release into the black box, where the cursor is. Remember, this command may not function as an internal or an external command. Usually, many versions of Microsoft Windows do not recognize this command. If you experience the same problem, type in winipcfg/release in the same way as before. Hit Enter.

Fourthly, when you see that the command is received, you need to type in ipconfig/renew, or winipcfg/renew in case the system didn't recognize the former command. Press Enter.

Fifthly, shut down your computer, and connect your Internet cable to your PC. After a few minutes, restart the computer. You will have a new IP address this time.

Getting a New Static IP Address

There are chances that while working and trying on new methods, you may detect IP address as actually a static one. For those who are unaware of what a Static IP address is, let me tell you that Servers or Internet service providers are in possession of static IP addresses that do not change usually. With the help of a static IP address, it becomes easy for your computer to connect to the Internet without fail. While it connects to your local Internet server in the first place, it then connects to the website you want to visit. So, naturally, it is a bit hard to get your static IP address changed. However, the following steps are something you can try on for once.

The first step is to connect your modem and computer directly. Click Start, and select Run. Type cmd in the box as a command.

Secondly, when the black box appears, type in ipconfig/all, which will pop out the present IP address that you have. Now, type in ipconfig/release.

Thirdly, you need to go to Control Panel, and select Network Connection. Pick up Local Area Connection and go to Properties. Click on Internet Protocol or TCP/IP.

Fourthly, when you see a new window pop up, select the tab that says General, and click on Use the Following IP Address. You need to put the IP address as 10.0.0.1. Press OK.

Fifthly, go to Network Connections again, and by right clicking the Local Area Connection, select Properties. This path will be similar to the one discussed in the third point above. Now, after selecting Properties, click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) again, and click Properties again.

Sixthly, select the General tab, and select Assign me an IP Address. Press OK.

Lastly, go to the Run command again, and type cmd. Put in ipconfig/all to get the IP address popped up. Your Static IP address setup would be a different one this time.

Disclaimer: The above methods are generic, and give basic information without claiming any assurance. Methods may vary in accordance with the type of PC and the Internet connection you have.

Did that help? Well, that's all about renewing an IP address, both generically as well as for a static IP address. Hopeful as I am, the above methods might be exactly what you were looking for. If even this doesn't work, you need to talk to your internet connection provider in order to get a new IP address generated.
