How to Get a Car on the Motability Scheme
If you are eligible for the motability scheme you may be able to get access to a vehicle.
The Motability scheme was set up to allow people with a disability to obtain a car through a mobility allowance. It is a not for profit organization with the aim of making it easier for someone with a disability to purchase a vehicle. To qualify for the scheme a person needs to be receiving the higher rate mobility allowance or a war pensioner's mobility supplement. The aim of the Motability scheme is to make the process of buying or hiring appropriate transport as easy as possible for those with a disability. To that end there are no credit checks carried out and no waiting lists for the scheme either.
The Motability scheme works by allowing the outright purchase of a vehicle on hire purchase or alternatively through contract hire in return for your higher rate mobility allowance or war pensioners mobility supplement. Any difference between the value of your allowance and the cost of the vehicle would be paid by you at the start of the financial agreement with Motability. The options are either a new car on a three or five year lease or a new or used car on hire purchase over two to five years. The contract hire option can give you a new choice of car every three years as well as insurance cover and maintenance.
If you are eligible for the scheme the first thing to do would be to find mobility vehicles suppliers in your area that work in conjunction with the Motability scheme. There are Motability premier partners that have been approved by the organization up and down the country and the Motability site has a list of these. Using an approved dealer is always a good idea as they will often be able to take care of the finance side for you and make credit applications on your behalf.
