If you are looking out for a job in this economy, either you are a fresher who has just passed from school/college or you are someone who is in between jobs. Well, let me tell you that finding a job is not easy and is not something that will happen overnight. It takes patience, effort, some intelligent thinking on your part as well as the right course of action mentioned below, to be successful in your job search.

Introspection
Let's start with the basics. To find a job after college, before the actual job hunt, you should be clear on the kind of work that you want to do and also, the kind of organization that you want to get into. For this, evaluate your interests, skills and education background and accordingly select a given field that you would like to make your career in. Once you are sure of this, the next step is to make a resume.

Resume and Cover Letter
Resume writing is an art. If you think that you are not so good in it, hire a professional or take help from someone more experienced than you. Along with the resume, be ready with a well written cover letter as well. The cover letter should very clearly mention the job that you have applied for as well as the qualifications, skills, any experience or accomplishments, that make you apt for the job. A cover letter gives an insight to the potential employers about the candidate and hence should be very professionally written.

Job Opportunities
The next is to look for organizations which have job openings of your choice. Internet is the best resource for finding such organizations. Sign up for all the popular online job search engines. On these sites, you will find jobs in various fields, such as advertising, teaching, writing, technical jobs, non-profit sector, etc. These job sites have advanced searches where you can narrow down your job search in accordance to the salary range you expect or the city that you want to take up the job in. Also, these sites offer the facility of sending you e-mails or alerts, every time a job matching your requirement comes up.

If you have worked in the past, one of the best way to find a job is to ask your ex-colleagues about job openings. Usually, people in the industry are much more aware of the job openings, even those ones which are still not advertised! For local jobs, yellow pages is a good resource. You can even spread the word around among your neighbors, friends and acquaintances that you are looking for a job. There are several recruiting companies which can guide you on job opportunities so you can hire their services too.

Interviews
Once you find jobs of your choice, start applying for them. Post resumes. Make calls to check in where your resume and job application stands. Go well prepared for the interview. Dress up neatly and answer the questions with confidence. In case you do not get a call for a second interview or are rejected, call again to take feedback. This will help you improve your interview skills. Keep posting resumes and going on interviews till you finally get a job of your choice and which pays in accordance to your expectations.

While you are searching for a job of your choice, it is recommended that you do not sit idle at home, doing nothing. Take up a part-time job to support yourself through this phase so that you do not "settle" for any job that comes your way and are actually able to "wait" for the right opportunity. All the best!
