How to Fight off Anxiety and Insomnia

Anxiety and insomnia often go hand in hand.
If you’re suffering from lack of sleep and insomnia, you know how it feels to lie in bed wondering if you are going to get any sleep. Tossing and turning, checking the time, adjusting the covers, over and over again. As the night wears on, you become more and more worried about the fact that you just are not going to get to sleep.

It’s the age old problem of the chicken and the egg. But for insomnia sufferers it’s which came first - the insomnia or the anxiety? Anxiety and insomnia are almost always intertwined. Insomnia can be caused by anxiety and insomnia can cause anxiety.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that can usually be grouped into three types: trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, or waking too early. All three of these patterns can cause anxiety. Whether you’re having trouble falling asleep or if you’re waking too early for your day, you lie in bed worried about your insomnia.

And thus the vicious cycle begins. Anxiety and insomnia, insomnia and anxiety. If you’re not sleeping at night and you are wondering how to find relief, you need to consider the cause of your insomnia. Are there things going on in your day that are making you anxious and stressed? If so, you may be carrying that stress into bed with you. Your mind and body can not let it go and you lie awake at night. Or are you worried about your sleep so much that you are developing an anxiety issue?

These are questions you should consider in treating your insomnia. If your anxiety and insomnia become too much to cope with, you should consult your physician.
