Step by Step Instructions for doing a Kickflip on a Skateboard
Assuming that you know how to do an ollie on a skateboard, we will see how is a kickflip done. Here we go:
- Your feet should be in a position akin to an ollie.
- Then place the ball of your front foot near the center of the skateboard, a little below the front bolts.
- Hit the tail of your skateboard, like it is done for an ollie. However, drag your front foot in the direction of the side of the board, in a flicking motion, rather than dragging the front foot up the board.
- Now you have to do this flip really fast, because the faster you do it, the faster you would be able to flip. It is the magic of your ankle and nothing else!
- Stay over the board while you jump and the board flips. Remember not to push down on the board once you are up. This will lead it to continue rising.
- Once the boars flips completely, let it hit your back foot. This is termed or referred to as catching the flip.
- Simultaneously, the front foot must not be far behind to get back on the board, though the back foot generally gets hold of the skateboard first.
- The previous step will help you control the trick better while landing.
- One very important thing as far as doing a kickflip on a skateboard for beginners is concerned, is that while landing or coming down, keep your feet as close as possible to the bolts.

This is perhaps the most common issue when you are learning to do a kickflip on a skateboard. If you are losing the board or it flies in front of you, it may mean that you are flipping it in the wrong place. Too much usage of leg strength could also be a cause of that. Ensure that you flick the corner of the deck. If your board spins sideways, this indicates that you are flicking it too hard. Tapping instead of flicking then can sort this out.
Another problem could be and perhaps a very very common problem is low kickflips. The only solution to this problem is practice and you will get all the skateboarding tricks!
