How to Design Your Own Clothes
Do you think you know how to design your own clothes? If you do, then you know the fun that it entails. If you don't then you are about to get enlightened. Read the article on some very useful tips, but not definitive procedures. I don't want you to lose your unique style.

Steps to Design Clothes On Your Own
Step 1
First things first, you need to know what it is that you wish you design. Think about everything that you want from the attire. Just like you would do when you go out shopping, you need to decide on the color, the pattern and the material that you want. Write down a list. Try drawing the patterns as they come to your mind as well. I suggest you make a few different ones, so that you get a clearer picture of what you want. If you are not a very good artist, fret not, just draw what you want without any inhibitions. This is your idea, you can draw it just the way it should be.
Step 2
The next step is research. While it is great that you are putting your own ideas into your attire, you also need to keep an eye out for external ideas. Go out window shopping and see the latest styles. Try not getting too influenced by the ones that may not suit you or your comfort. However, the window shopping can bring out unique patterns and color combinations in your mind. More so, if you have thought of an idea, and you see a similar one during your research, you can get an idea as to how it may end up looking when the final product is ready.
Step 3
Next would be buying the cloth material and making a fair draft of the design. You can take the help of a professional at this stage. Give yourself ample time to find the right cloth material. Seek out thrift stores as well as sales. You can also try to find a few clothes design templates on the internet. These are available in most possible patterns. If you find any that appeal to you and your design, you can put it to good use. Also, be on the lookout for the right accessories for the outfit. Like, if it needs beads or buttons, look for the perfect ones. I strongly suggest that you give this stage time and effort. Don't settle for less than perfect stuff.
Step 4
The next step is the easiest one, now you can go to your tailor and give him the material and the design. Make sure your tailor measures you well, so that you get the right fit.
Ideas to Design Your Outfits
You can design old clothes to give them a new look too. This method of designing your own clothing, does not require you to know how to design clothes using your own patterns; which makes things so much easier.
- You can also re-design your older clothes to give them a new look. Like, if you are bored of your old jeans, you can rip them from the knees. Or, you could even try cutting them from the bottom up and converting them into shorts. You can also try hemming the edge to give it a neat look, or let it be, to give it a shabby, yet, cool look.
- You can take an old dress, that is (probably) too long. Cut off the bottom and hem it neatly. You can also add a few embellishments to make it look more stylish.
- If you have a pale shirt, you can simply take some fabric paint and make random designs all over it. Personally I like the idea of having palm prints on the chest.
