How to Deal with Social Anxiety Disorder: Breathe!

Sometimes medication and counseling are not enough when dealing with social anxiety disorder. This article gives you tips on using simple breathing techniques to reduce social anxiety disorder symptoms.
Social anxiety disorder can be crippling to say the least. People with the disorder are often trapped by the symptoms of the disease. Some have such severe cases that they rarely leave their homes or interact with others. This does not need to be the case though.

Medication and psychotherapy or talk therapy are by far the most common methods of treatment. However, breathing techniques, often overlooked, can also be extremely effective in helping social anxiety disorder sufferers cope.

One of the best breathing techniques that can offer relief is a technique called the "cleansing breath" technique. It’s very simple to learn and can be used discretely in almost any environment. You can employ the "cleansing breath" technique by inhaling slowly and silently counting to ten as you inhale. Then, proceed to hold the air in your lungs for another ten count. When finished, slowly exhale and count to ten again as you release the air. If you do this three or four times in a row you’ll find that your heart rate will slow and you will begin to feel more relaxed. This technique is certainly not a cure-all but it has proven effective. Many social anxiety disorder sufferers employ this technique before engaging in a stress causing event such as public speaking or a job interview.

Another breathing technique that can provide relief is called "power breathing". This technique is best done in private. "Power breathing" is performed by resting the palms of your hands on your lower abdomen and deeply breathing in while distending your lower stomach muscles. In other words, as you breathe in you consciously push out your stomach muscles. Next, release your breath and pull your stomach muscles in as the air is released. Your chest should rise at the same time that your breath is released. To achieve the maximum benefit from "power breathing" try repeating this exercise several times in a row until you achieve a rocking motion. This technique helps to relax the body from head to toe.

As you practice and perfect these two techniques you will find that they can significantly reduce your social anxiety disorder symptoms. The best part about breathing techniques is that they are free! Unlike medication and psychotherapy, breathing techniques do not cost a thing and are scientifically proven to help social anxiety disorder sufferers.
