How to Cut Own Hair - Common Mistake 1

Not practising with a mirror. OK, to cut own hair you’ll be standing or sitting in front of a mirror right? Have you ever attempted anything remotely complicated with your hair or face in front of a mirror? If so, you’ll know how difficult it is to direct your hand movement due to the ‘opposites’ effect of the mirror.

Imagine what will happen if you hold a pair of scissors to your head with no clue how to handle it? This event alone scares away 75% of people who ever attempt it - back to the salon they run.

You’ve got to practice! This will take a bit of time depending on your skillfulness. Start with a pencil. Hold it near your hair and move it around slowly as if you are cutting your own hair. Try and get a feel for the motion of the pencil in the reflection and how it relates to motion above your head.

How to Cut Own Hair - Common Mistake 2

Using blunt scissors. When learning how to cut own hair, a lot of people use a blunt pair of scissors as they’re afraid of cutting themselves. Not smart. Blunt scissors can cause pulling of hair instead of cutting!

Sharp scissors are actually easier to cut hair with and aren’t really that dangerous if you take it slow and steady. Just be sensible with them!

Cut Own Hair - Common Mistake 3

Cutting dry hair. Not hugely important for people with short hair, but if you have long hair you should shampoo it and keep it damp before you try to cut own hair. This will keep it softer and tangle free making it easier to cut evenly. Trust me, you’ll notice the difference.

These are only the very basic tips on how to cut own hair. For more info check out my bio box.
