Cough is one of the most common conditions as well as symptoms experienced by people of all age groups. It can be a condition in itself as in case of whooping cough or a symptom of some other respiratory disorder like tuberculosis, etc. In most of the cases, if cough is found to be accompanied by sore throat. Having chicken soup is an age-old effective remedy to treat cough and sore throat which is used even today. Apart from this, the following are natural or home remedies.
  • Honey and Lemon: The mixture of honey and lemon has been used since long time to treat cough. You can add a teaspoon of honey, 1-2 teaspoon of lemon juice to a glass of warm water and have it once or twice a day.
  • Tea: Herbal tea, ginger tea, etc. have also been used as remedies for cough since long time, specially in the Asian continent. You can add 2-3 slices of ginger while preparing tea and have this tea once or twice a day.
  • Turmeric: Turmeric contains natural properties and is one of the best cough suppressant home remedies. You can add ½ teaspoon turmeric powder in one glass of milk; or add it in 1 teaspoon of honey and have it once a day.
  • Honey and White Pepper: As honey contains all natural properties, it is considered as one of the best dry cough remedy. You can add a pinch of white pepper to a teaspoon of honey and have it 2-3 times a day.
  • Holy Basil: Holy basil is also one of the best herb used to treat several ailments. You can make a concoction by taking 1-2 cups of water, 3-4 leaves of holy basil, 1 teaspoon of water and boil it. Having this mixture warm, can be the best remedy to treat coughing fits.
Treating Cough with Medication

There are several medications like cough syrups, drops and suppressants that can be helpful. Most of these can be gotten over-the-counter and do not need any prescription. Cough with phlegm can be treated with expectorant cough medicines that can also be bought over-the-counter. Sprays can also be used to treat symptoms of sore or strep throat in adults. However, one should note that sprays are not recommended for children and should not be used. Cough lozenges containing honey and ginger can also be used by children and adults.

It should be noted that these remedies can only be helpful for treating dry cough caused due to minor reasons. In case other symptoms observe, it is wise to consult the doctor immediately.
