How to Cope with Homesickness

As human beings we develop a belonging feeling when living in a social environment. This attachment is something that happens with time and gradually matures. Any thought or behavior that demands a separation from this attachment often cannot be handled by most of us immediately. The feelings of anxiety, depression, nostalgia, depression, loneliness, etc., are the ones that haunt our minds. These feelings can be precisely defined as feeling homesick, or homesickness. This is a natural feeling that arises when one moves away from home to a new environment or city. There are many times that the demands of a job, career, and other social dealings, requires one to stay away from home for a certain period of time. The initial stages are quite soothing and exciting as you suddenly get introduced to change and learn new things, meet new people, etc. However, after sometime, you realize you are feeling nostalgic, missing home and want to be with your family and loved ones. This usually happens at college, work, or a new place is common. This feeling should not be ignored, but dealt with responsibly. If not taken care of, at times, this sadness may affect your emotional, psychological, and gradually physical and social well-being. Tips to Deal with Homesickness

The best thing to do is to focus and adapt to changes. Let your worries take a backseat while you read the following.
  • Make New Contacts: When you are away from home due to studies, job or other reasons, one thing that will really help you is making friends and meeting new people. Even though you may not be the best of pals, having a good friend circle is healthy. Go to the movies, have your meals together, you can also join a new club or participate in some events and activities.
  • Spend Some Time for Yourself: Start with workouts, yoga, aerobics, jogging, etc. Indulge in things that make you feel happy, like music, dance and even shopping if you want. Surround yourself with feel good things like your family photos, favorite toys, pillows. Indulge in reading your favorite books, cook your favorite meal, treat yourself to a warm bath or spa. Watch TV or stroll down some park. Get yourself a collection of scrap books. Pin your favorite letters, poems, thoughts. Moreover, if you like maintaining a diary, open your feelings to writing. Do things that you always wanted to do, like enjoying some sport, visiting an art gallery, exhibitions, etc.
  • Know Your Place: When you come to a new surrounding, get to know more about that place or city. Visit the places which the city or place is famous for. It can be food, monuments, markets, etc. Exploring the new place will only make you fearless and secured in the new environment. You can click pictures of yourself and your friends in the new place. Share them with your friends and family back home. If you are in a foreign country, learn their language, understand their culture and traditions. You can also plan a short trip nearby to change your mood.
  • Stay Positive: Understand that adjusting to a new place takes time, and that you will deal with it. The initial times are always hard to cope with, so be prepared for the same. Make it a point to call back home or send letters / emails, and stay in touch with your family and loved ones. Remember, there is always a good part of being alone, you get to know yourself, learn new things, and become more strong and responsible. Understand that you have your well wishers and family that will never want you to be sad and depressed. And if anything goes wrong, they will be just a call away from you. Also when you feel very low, never suppress your feelings. Let them out, even if that means you have to cry, do it. Talk to a friend, write about it in your diary. Sometimes, even talking to yourself works (I know it may sound crazy), you will really feel much lighter and happier.
