How to Clean Stainless Steel

Stainless steel, contrary to what the name suggests, isn't completely resistant to stains. Stainless steel appliances require cleaning on a regular basis to prevent corrosion, rust and damage caused by other stains. Here are some methods that should be followed to keep your stainless steel spotless for years to come.
How to Clean Stainless Steel
Stainless steel appliances are not difficult to clean, but it is essential to attend to stains as early as possible. Removing the stain after it sets, may require more effort that could possibly damage the steel. Following are the different ways that can help to clean stainless steel appliances:

Warm Water

Many prefer to use only warm water to clean stainless steel to prevent any damage. A soft cloth or a towel is then used to dry the object to prevent water spots. This method of cleaning does not cause any harm to the steel, but unfortunately, does not remove tough stains either.

Mild Detergents

For routine cleaning, one can use mild detergents and warm water. Although stainless steel is durable, it can be sensitive to strong cleaners. Hence, using a gentle detergent like a dish soap, is a better option as it does not damage the steel. Ammonium solutions mixed in warm water or a mild detergent, are considered to be stainless steel's best friends. One can also soak the object to be cleaned in warm water diluted with a mild detergent, for some time. This helps remove stains without much effort. However, for really tough stains, one may have to soak the object overnight.

While cleaning the object, one can also use a nylon scouring pad or a soft bristle brush, to remove the dirt from the surface. Do not rub very hard or use a circular rubbing action, otherwise it may leave scratches.

Repeated Application of Mild Cleaners

Always use mild cleaning methods first and repeat them a number of times, to clean tough spots. Repeated routine cleaning often removes heavier stains, that may completely disappear after a period of time. Ensure that the utensil is rinsed thoroughly with clean water, to prevent staining. Under any circumstances the soap used for cleaning, should not remain on the surface after washing the utensil. Drying the utensil with a towel after rinsing, is necessary to prevent wet spots.

Household Ammonia for Fingerprints

Fingerprints on stainless steel appliances are indeed very annoying. The solution to this problem is to use household ammonia or glass cleaner. The minerals in water are responsible for causing water spots. A dry cloth can easily remove these water spots.

Vinegar

A simple way to clean stainless steel is to use undiluted vinegar. It can work wonders in dissolving little stains. An effective way to use vinegar, is to apply it with a dampened cloth and then wash the object with warm soapy water. Immediately after cleaning, one can notice a distinct shine on the surface.

Strong Abrasive Cleaners

If nothing works, this is the last resort. Harsh chemicals such as nitric acid diluted with water, may help remove tough rust stains. The acid must be handled only after wearing rubber gloves and eye protection. Various commercial brands of strong abrasive cleaners are available in the market. However, by using these products the surface of the stainless steel is likely to get affected.

Stainless Steel Cleaners

There are a number of stainless steel cleaners available in the market. These products are specially designed for cleaning stainless steel utensils. They leave the surface spotless and shiny. Stainless steel cleaners protect against smudges and fingerprints.

Always remember, for the routine cleaning of stainless steel appliances, a gentle detergent is the best possible option to prevent any potential damage.
