Granite countertops are expensive, but are cherished for their exquisite beauty. They are available in a wide range of colors and patterns and are great as kitchen countertops, on account of their qualities of durability and resistance to heat. Granite is actually a non-homogeneous stone that is formed from volcanic magma. As it is a very hard stone, granite countertops do not get easily scratched. However, despite all the hardness, they need proper cleaning as well as care and maintenance to retain that lustrous shine and to last several years.

How to Clean Granite Countertops

Cleaning granite countertops is not very hard, but needs some special care and precautions. You will find a range of products in the market, each claiming to be the best cleaner. However, it is important to choose the right one. Although granite countertops are hard, it is not advisable to use harsh cleaners or chemicals on them. You should always use a product with a neutral pH, as acidic cleaners can scratch or etch the surface.

Sometimes, you will find the best cleaning agent right in your home. One such cleaning agent that can be used for cleaning your beautiful granite countertops is isopropyl rubbing alcohol, which has a neutral pH. The other common option for cleaning granite countertops is to use dishwashing soaps or detergents. You can also mix them both, i.e. you can add a few drops of dishwashing detergent to alcohol (about half cup) and then add this mixture to a bottle of water. Now, sprinkle this mixture on the surface of the countertop and rub it gently with a sponge. For drying out the surface completely, you can use a soft towel or cloth. This method is considered by many as the best way to clean granite countertops.

Although dishwashing detergent can be used safely for cleaning granite countertops, it can lead to a build-up of a soap scum on the surface that may diminish the shine of your countertop and make it dull, if used on a regular basis. Therefore, frequent use of soaps or dishwashing detergents is not recommended. Also, do not use glass cleaners, bleach, degreasers, ammonia and bathroom, tub and tile cleaners, as they can scratch the surface. It is better to avoid any kind of abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals. Instead, use products that have neutral pH. For regular cleaning, a microfiber cloth can be used to dust off the surface.

Cleaning stains from granite countertops can be a little difficult to remove and so, any liquid spill should be immediately soaked up with a cloth. Do not directly put acidic substances like wine, fruit juices, sodas and tomato sauce, which can stain the surface of the granite countertops. Any kind of acidic and alkaline substance can damage granite sealer and thereby, make it more prone to stains. Also, do not drag the kitchen appliances across the surface.

So, regular wiping with water and applying isopropyl rubbing alcohol once in a week are sufficient to keep your granite countertops clean. You can occasionally use mild stone cleaner for this purpose, but a proper research on the product is essential before applying it on your granite countertops. In addition to cleaning, proper care and maintenance is also important. You should test your granite countertops, preferably once in a year with the help of a professional to see if sealing is required. For repairing any kind of damage, a stone care professional should be consulted.
