How To Choose The Music Selections For Your Wedding Ceremony

Choosing ceremony music can challenging, where do you begin? How do you choose? We have several ideas and tips for helping you narrow your list of song selections for your wedding ceremony.
First and foremost, remember that your wedding should be a direct reflection of both you and your fiance's preferences and styles. Selecting the music for your wedding ceremony can a difficult task, if you don't know where to start or how to plan.

Before you begin looking at specific song titles and selections, you and your fiancé should consider the style that interests you. For example, if you like traditional, you probably wouldn't want any modern songs from today and vice versa. Knowing your style will help you to determine what song titles to look for.

Some examples of styles could be:

Modern
Traditional
Contemporary

Once you have chosen your style, you can begin the fun task of picking out songs, and eliciting others for their input. This is especially important when you have parents involved in your wedding planning. While ultimately it is your decision, it's always a good idea to bounce ideas off of others. There is no wedding police, so whatever you decide, there is no right or wrong.

As you begin to scout out songs for the big day, put a list together, with columns. It will make narrowing the list down much easier. We have several planning tools and forms on our website, which can help you with this. On a sheet of paper make some columns with the song titles and categories, then a section for the brides favorites, the groom's favorites, the bride's family favorites, and finally the groom's family favorites. If you are unsure, check out our website for some examples of templates for choosing songs.

There are several elements you will need to pick songs for. Some of them include, but are not limited to:

Prelude
Pre Processional
Processional
Bride's Entrance
Sand/Rose Ceremony
Unity Candle
Recessional
Interlude

Now is not the time to rule anything out, if it peaks your interest, put it on the list. Once you have your list together, listen to the songs two or three times. The internet has several websites which you to listen to sample clips for ideas. Your Wedding Disc Jockey is another great resource for listening to the music. Practice walking with the songs, so you can get an idea for pacing and timing. A two minute song wouldn't work for a huge bridal party, unless you plan to play the song multiple times. Practicing and listening over and over will help you begin to narrow the list. Just remember, no matter what you decide, remember it's your wedding, and the decision is ultimately yours. Enjoy planning your wedding, it's going to be great!
