How To Choose A Great Kids Craft Book
Doing crafts with your kids is stimulating, educational and fun! But the market for kids craft books is crowded and they're not all as good as you might hope. So how do you make the right choice?
Is there anything better than doing crafts with your kids? It's not only educational but also helps develop important skills like dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Perhaps most important of all its something involving and entertaining that you can do together.
Most of us have a few craft ideas up our sleeves that we can share with our children but the little darlings seem to use up ideas like putting kindling on a fire and I for one find keeping up with them something of a challenge to say the least. Salvation (and a good deal of peace and quiet) can be found in a good kids craft book.
It could be suggested that almost any craft can be taught to your kids and as long as there aren't sharp tools or potentially dangerous chemicals involved this is perfectly true and no bad thing. However, small hands don't quite have the same skill set as adult ones and so some things, like knitting for example, can easily defeat them - and we all know how easily kids can be discouraged by a little setback.
A good kids craft book will provide challenges which are specifically designed to be achieved reasonably easily and will thereby encourage further experimentation and development. They'll provide a set of small steps towards a goal and in that way keep your child interested and making progress.
Keeping childish minds focussed is near on an impossible task - and I'm not sure we should try too hard - but being able to succeed and make something recognisable in a fairly short space of time will encourage them to want to do more - doesn't it with all of us?
A really great book of kids crafts will also provide crafting ideas that allows you to leave them to it for short periods. Let's face it, much as we like to share time together there are always pressures from other directions and it's quite impossible to keep your attention on your kids every minute. We're only human, we all have to answer the call of nature sometimes!
Other things you can expect from a good kids craft book are a wide variety of crafts. Again it's a way of keeping your children interested. Try to do the same thing every day and they can soon become bored. Choose a different craft, in fact get them to choose something to try, and they'll be keen to learn more.
You should also look for children's crafts that are easy to do in groups so you can get together with your friends and their children. There are more than just crafting skills to learn here, and it's also easier to keep an eye on the little darlings if there is more than one pair of eyes doing the job!
Another consideration is the material costs. You can do a lot with some glue, paints and few paper plates - in fact few crafts are very expensive - but most of us need to watch the pennies to some degree so it's something to think about when you're choosing.
Fortunately there are a lot of kids craft books that are very affordable. You'll find lots of titles offering hundreds of ideas for under ten dollars. I've just done a quick search and the most expensive book I could find was under thirty so you can afford to get several and should be able to keep those growing minds entertained for years!
