How to Change a Fuel Filter

If you have no idea about changing a fuel filters, this article will be helpful. Replacement of this car part is necessary to maintain efficiency of the car engine. Read to know all about it.
Car problems can be nipped in the bud, only if one follows a regular maintenance regimen for the car. Things like fuel filters are car parts which are vital for improving the engine's fuel efficiency.

Fuel Filter Function

It is a dedicated filter for the fuel line of an engine. It screens the incoming fuel in the engine, from the fuel tank, for any rust or other contaminants. This filtering action is necessary to protect the fuel injectors from abrasion caused by contaminant particles. Fuel filtering also improves the engine efficiency.

Many diesel filters contain water sensors that help in preventing water entry in the diesel engine, as it can be very damaging. Diesel filter change or cleaning is even more essential than a petrol engine. A checkup and replacement of this car part, if required, is recommended after ten to fifteen thousand miles.

Replacement Procedure

Pulling off this job on your own, can save the labor charges that are a part of the replacement cost. The tools that you'll require for this replacement job are the following:
  • Wrenches
  • Screwdriver (Both Flat Head & Phillips)
  • Car Jack
  • Flashlight
  • Safety Glasses & Gloves
Also, keep one or two pencils with you as you will need them and of course a new filter. Once you are armed with all these tools and are equipped with safety glasses and gloves, you are ready for the job.

Let me caution you about some things before we go ahead. Never ever go ahead with a fuel filter replacement when the car engine is hot. Keep your cigarettes and pipes away while you are on the job!

Before starting work, for some cars and types of trucks, it is absolutely necessary that you release fuel pressure in the fuel supply line. This can be done my depressing a special fuel pressure valve.

First task is to elevate your vehicle using a car jack, so that you can access the filter fitted on the fuel line. Use two jacks as relying on one jack is not that safe (unless you don't mind being crushed under the car!).

Next, get under the car and locate the fuel filter using a flashlight. It is generally close to the air filter and the fuel tank. Often, these filters are covered with a plastic, to prevent exposure and damage. To access and remove this filter, you must remove this cover using a wrench or a screwdriver.

After the cover is off, observe the filter. Locate the fuel lines connected to it. They may be connected using brackets or clips. You need to remove these connected fuel lines by removing these clips. Using a screwdriver or wrench, remove these linking brackets or clips. If you open up these fuel lines, then they are going to squirt out fuel on your face. When you remove them, clamp them with pencils or any golf tees that you can get hold of.

Once you clamp them, keep them tilted in direction of the drainage canister. Next remove the fuel filter and note its orientation. Replace it with the new filter and see to it that it is placed rightly. Reconnect the fuel hose with the help of brackets and clips.

If there are any more doubts about the procedure, they will be taken care of, when you venture ahead and observe things on your own. In case you are not confident, let a professional handle it or take help from somebody who knows about it.
