How to Care for Your Pets in an Economic Recession

Savvy pet owners can care for their pets even during a recession. Buying food and supplies in bulk, or just making homemade pet food are some of the things that can help during hard economic times.
These days, it’s not just people who are feeling the effects of the recession. Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been affected by the downturn of the economy and family pets are no exception. Animal shelters are crowded because many families cannot afford to care their pets anymore and many pet parents are feeling the pinch and even sacrifice their own needs in order to keep their pets healthy and well nourished.

My sister Emily just lost her job. In addition to her two teenage children she also has 2 dogs and 3 cats. They have to make do with her husband’s salary and her unemployment check. How do they make ends meet?

In addition to taking drastic measures such as turning off lights at night except in the room they are using, cutting coupons and others ways of saving money, Emily doesn’t buy pet food anymore; that is, commercial pet food.

Since she is not working, she now has more time to cook for her family, and that includes the cats and the 2 pooches. When she goes to Cotsco to get groceries, she includes on her list, the items she will need to make scrumptious dishes for the four legged members of her family.

As a guideline, she uses all of the recipes included in Dr Richard H. Pitcairn’s book entitled Dr. Ptcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats. Her cats are enjoying dishes such as "Mackarel Loaf" and "Feline Feast" and her dogs are wolfing down "Quick Canine Hash" or the most economical "One on One", a dish that is both economical and ecologically sound because it gets most of its protein from beans.

All of Dr. Pitcairn recipes contain the right balance of ingredients needed to keep a dog or cat healthy and well nourished. The book is about pet health in general but it a large portion of it is dedicated to educate the reader in pet nutrition. He recommends to follow the recipes closely since they have been scientifically designed, but he also states that "fixing fresh nutritious meals for pets is very little trouble and even fun". Just think about your beloved animals’ enthusiastic approval of your cooking. and it might even be more rewarding than cooking for your kids!

Not only is my sister saving a bundle on her pet food budget, her pets are enjoying well balanced and nutritious meals.
