How to Care for a Brittany Spaniel

Step 1: Fence in your yard. (Ideally, fence in your acreage!) Because of their hunting instincts, Brittanys love to roam and wander through hills and brush. Hopefully you have enough space for them to do this. If not, plan on taking your dog to such places on a regular basis. Brittany Spaniels do not make good apartment dogs because of their need for large spaces.
Step 2: Get her a sweater. Brittanys do not thrive in cold and damp climates and will need to be kept warm and kept inside the house.
Step 3: Socialize your Brittany as soon as you take her home. She can make a good family pet, if she is exposed to children right away and if she is trained in appropriate behavior. Some families feel that this breed can be hyperactive, so be sure to seek obedience training if you’re having a hard time handling her energy level.
Step 4: Engage in a lot of physical activity with this breed. If you don’t plan on using your dog to hunt, you will need to exercise her in other ways. This breed should go on daily walks or runs, and also enjoys a good game of fetch. A great way to exercise your Brittany is to have her fetch into the water so she can swim as well.
Step 5: Because of the constant exercise you will give her, keep an eye out for signs and symptoms of hip dysplasia. Talk with your vet about joint supplements you can give her to help ward off this problem. This overall healthy breed has been known to suffer from seizures as well.
Step 6: Maintain a regular low maintenance grooming routine. Brittany Spaniels should be bathed every few weeks, should be brushed daily, and have their teeth brushed daily. Always check her ears when you return from hunting or wandering in the hills.
With proper care and attention to health and nutrition, you should be able to enjoy a decade or more with your Brittany Spaniel.
