How to Blind Stitch by Hand?
In blind stitch, the thumb rule is to run the sewing thread at the near surface of the fabric, but not actually through the cloth fabric. In short, the needle catches a thread or two from the surface, without passing the other visible side of the fabric. It is perfect for hemming pants and skirts, and putting labels on clothing. The following are simple steps on blind stitching a hem by hand:
- First of all, gather the required supplies - fabric, a needle, matching colored thread and scissors. If you are a beginner, use a scrap cloth for learning blind stitch.
- Thread the sewing needle with the matching colored thread, and put a knot or two on one end. Slightly, roll back the raw side of the hem and iron over the fold. This will crease the cloth material for easy blind stitching.
- Instead of ironing, an easy way is to put safely pins along the length of the fold. If you are using two fabrics, then also pin them to keep in place.
- From the back side of the fabric, slide the needle and pull the thread, so that the knot holds the material in place. Starting from right side of the fabric (if you are right-handed), make small, nearly invisible stitches along the length of the hem.
- If you are using two fabrics, you can make tiny invisible stitches in the first fabric, while retaining larger stitches in the second fabric. Afterward, you can learn to make small stitches on both fabrics.
How to Blind Stitch by Machine?
Since hand sewing takes longer time and effort, you can consider blind stitch by using a sewing machine. Nearly all sewing machines have this feature and you can identify it from the symbol. Look for the stretch blind hem and regular blind hem symbols in your user guide, and use them as per your requirements. For sewing a smooth, invisible blind hem stitch, make the required settings in the machine. Following this, roll back the raw edge of the garment and start sewing. With proper control over the sewing machine, you can sew blind stitch on any type of fabric.
