How to Become a Surgeon

The medical profession is meant for highly talented and skilled students, who have a deep interest in medical jobs. Students who are sincere and consistently score well in subjects like Biology, Zoology and Botany, can think of joining a degree course in medicine and then a post-graduate course in surgery. Becoming a surgeon needs consistent hard work, stamina and willingness to learn new things in this field. As a surgeon, you should be ready to work for long hours and at any time of the day, if you have to deal with emergencies. Another factor to be considered before joining a medical college is the affordability of the fees. Being a coveted and high paying profession, a medical degree does not come at a shoe string budget. You will have to spend a lot on your tuition and other related expenses. So, think whether you really have the talent and aptitude for joining the medical field. Also, you should be ready to study for many years, as medical courses, on an average, are of seven or eight years duration.

High School and Bachelor's Degree
To become a surgeon, you should start working on your dream right from high school. Concentrate on medical subjects like Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and score well in your high school so that you will get admission to a good university for your bachelor's degree. Note one thing that to make a mark in the medical world, your fundamental concepts of science should be very clear.

The bachelor's degree in medicine is of four years and you are required to score excellent marks to get admission for the master programs. Be very careful while selecting a college for your bachelor's degree and make sure that your college has a good history and accreditation with the main university. You should refer to the suggestions of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) while deciding the class and ranking of the medical colleges. Find out whether the medical school has latest equipment, good laboratories and highly experienced staff for your own benefit. Give preference to those medical schools, which allow you or give you part-time jobs which earns you some money, but also gives you an experience in the medical profession. Work hard and gather most knowledge, so that you will not face problems while clearing the entrance exam for the master's degree in surgery. It is advisable to take the MCAT exams at the time of your junior year of college itself. Many colleges do not give admission to students who do not have good MCAT scores. Participation in other extra-curriculum activities is also equally important. At the end of your junior year, you can apply for the seats in medical schools.

Medical School
You should try to make most of the golden opportunity which you get, as getting admission in a good medical school is extremely difficult. Your surgical training will be the highlight of the four years you will be spending there. What kind of surgeon you would become and operate - whether heart surgery, brain, plastic surgery or orthopedic, would be based on your scores. In the first two years, you will be given classroom and lab training on vital subjects, like Immunology, Microbiology, Pathology and Forensic Pathology, Histology, etc. In the second year itself, you would have to appear and clear the first part of the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE). In the third year, you would get practical experience which is very essential for a surgeon. You would be getting good exposure to pediatrics, gynecology and family practice. In the fourth year, you would have to give the second part of USMLE and do well in it.

Residency
The residency program provide college pass-outs training from experienced surgeons in patient care, medical knowledge and developing interpersonal skills. You have to work in hospitals as an assistant surgeon for the five-year residency internship. The American College Of Surgeons help the aspirants in choosing the proper residency program. Residency programs are compulsory, if you wish to practice as a surgeon in the US.
